First sung in the 15th Century and first published int he 16th Century, this hymn is still popular in the 21st Century. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

Released as a single in 1988, the track peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-40 hit in Australia and Ireland. Songwriter Roddy Frame said in 2014 that the song has been great for him, but at the time of creating the album, the song was not in keeping with the other songs. Around this time, Frame had become somewhat of a recluse, living in a remote wooden shack in Hollywood, Marple Bridge, in the hills above Manchester, going through periods of good and bad mental health, while continuing to write music, including the lyric from Westwood to Hollywood in the song. The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50.

Bet you never knew the sound of a train whistle was actually a Diminished 7th Chord! Well, it is, as your band will demonstrate clearly when they play the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo! Watch the eyebrows in your audience go up as they, too, realize the musical nature of that train! After four progressively louder and longer blasts from the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo, the band settles into a jaunty melody, replete with your percussion section providing that rhythmic clackety-clack that put so many cross country passengers to sleep in the heyday of train travel. An ascending scale pushes the train to the top of a hill, and a descending scale brings everyone back down to the plains. Finally, the destination is in sight. As the train slows gradually to a stop at the station, your band members vocalize Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Woo Woo in unison, and everyone can disembark. Scored for Elementary Band, be sure to prep your concert-goers with a hearty, All Aboard, when introducing this piece! .
