Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

With Schnoodles, each part takes turns carrying and supporting the melody giving each player the opportunity to experience both roles simultaneously. While Schnoodles give each player a lot to play, they also give players some creative choices. None come with a prescribed tempo, and most allow students to determine the appropriate articulations and dynamics for the piece based on their abilities, preferences, and interpretations - and hopefully - guidance from a teacher! Giacommo Puccini, represents the union of Italian and German opera traditions, greatly influenced by Verdi, of whom he is considered his successor, and also by Wagner, Bizet, and Debussy. The main feature of his style was the eclecticism, the incorporation and assimilation of various languages and resources in his profession. Many of the musical concepts, as well as the connection between music and the stage, were the harbinger of what would rule in film music a few decades later. Puccini tooks from the French opera, under the influence of Bizet and Massenet, the taste for the exotic and historical location of his operas. In the case of Turandot, set in ancient China, the opera tells the story of the cruel princess Turandot who, in revenge for a sullied ancestor, beheads her suitors if three riddles are not answered. An unknown prince –Calaf– postulates by answering her three enigmas and challenging her to be the one to find out her name. Turandot orders that no one sleep in Peking until the name of the prince is known, Calaf, who has issued the challenge that if his name is not discovered, princess Turandot must marry him. At the beginning of the third act, the prince sings the aria –Nessun Dorma– convinced that the princess's efforts to discover his name will be in vain. Puccini began the composition in January 1921 and in March 1924 he had already completed the opera up to the final duet. However, a few months later he would pass away, leaving unfinished sketches of the end of Turandot. Franco Alfano was commissioned to finish it, premiering it two years later, in 1926. Currently, it is the fourth most performed Puccini opera worldwide, after the well-known trio La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly.

The composer writes, of 'Souvenirs': In 1952 I was writing some duets for one piano to play with a friend, and Lincoln Kirstein suggested I orchestrate them for a ballet. Commissioned by the Ballet Society, the suite consists of a waltz, schottische, pas de deux, two step, hesitation tango, and gallop. One might imagine a divertissement in a setting of the Palm Court of the Hotel Plaza in New York, the year about 1914, epoch of the first tangos; 'Souvenirs, remembered with affection, not in irony or with tongue in cheek, but in amused tenderness'. This lovely movement would make a suitable quiet interlude in a concert of dance music and has been lowered by a tone to make the key more band-friendly.

It opens with a tuba and woodblock duet and then skips along happily through a couple meter changes and ends delightfully in two parts. In some ways, this is a relatively simple song. In other ways, it’s tricky. At one place, the melody is tossed around, being played by most instruments within 8 measures. Then, it morphs into 6/8 time for just a few delightful measures before going back to 4/4 for the grand wind-up. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Cover Pages and Conductor's Score are 8.5 x 14. They will need to be printed on appropriate sized paper. The libretto was written by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. Generally known as The Pearl Fishers' Duet, it is one of the most popular numbers in Western opera – it appeared on seven of the Classic 100 Countdowns conducted by ABC Classic FM. It is sung by Nadir (tenor) and Zurga (baritone) in act 1 and has been performed by many famous singers, including Andrea Bocelli and Bryn Terfel. I composed and dedicated this piece to my 2022-2023 students of the band program at the Melaleuca Elementary School (FL). The work was premiered in May 2023.I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an ABA form, unisons, and duet textures. The Score has written a Drum Set part, but I had two students playing the music (one student for the snare, the other for the bass drum). This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method. Grade: 0.5.
