Marcus (A0.1416281). Many of us may not be aware that Franz Schubert's famous Marche Militaire in D is only the first in a set of three military marches for piano duet published in 1826. This is a colorful arrangement the third Marche Militaire in E-flat for concert band. It's a little gem with enough delightful melody, high spirits, and audience appeal to stand proudly beside its renowned sibling.This arrangement interprets Schubert's march for a modern band, but it alludes to the sound of early 20th century European marches. The horns have interesting and important parts rather than the usual pecking afterbeats! This arrangement of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is a small concert band arrangement of the traditional marching song sung by soldiers who are on the march and remembering the girl they left behind. The instrumentation is for a smaller band with 1 flute/piccolo part, oboe, 3 clarinet parts, 2 alto sax parts, tenor and baritone saxes, 3 trumpet parts, 2 horn parts, 3 trombone parts, euphonium, tuba, snare drum, bass drum, and crash cymbals. It is easily accessible by most high school bands and community bands (grade 2 1/2). At one point in the music, the players call out left!, left!, left, right, left! etc., just as soldiers would do on the march. Length is approximately 1'45.

Â This piece opens with a bold brass fanfare introduction, then it has a 16 bar excerpt from a famous Fred Jewell march. Â Franklin has a long history of community bands and a Jewell march would have been a characteristic sound over the past 100 years. Â And furthermore there is a direct link to this town since in 1927 Fred Jewell was appointed Director of the Masonic Home Band in Franklin, (and Jewell also happens to be a cousin of this composer!) Â The middle Chorale section of this composition has woven in 11 very short quotes from known songs that will remind listeners of Franklin institutions or values and virtues that helped build the town. Â The final section is pure celebration in the form of a Caribbean calypso.
