The song had been written for performances by bass and tenor vocal duet.The song begins: Dark the shades of night are growing, keen and chill the wind is blowing, bright the watchfire lights are glowing, 'Tis the battle eve…The piece appears to have been composed in the early 1890s with the first recorded performance at the Athenaeum in Melbourne (Australia) in May 1893. ‘The Battle Eve’ was very popular during the First World War period with many performances at many concerts related to the war effort in Australia. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. Miss Eva Beatson performed the song with proceeds from the evening totaling 52 pounds. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Denied writing credit by Fox and Gimbel, Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, but it did not chart. In 1973, it became a number-one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada for Roberta Flack, and also reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. In 1996, Fugees recorded the song with Lauryn Hill on lead vocals. Their version became a number-one hit in twenty countries and since then, the song has often been performed by Flack and Fugees together on stage. This version for concert band features cor anglais on the opening melody but plenty of opportunities for expressive playing throughout the band.

Lillian Hardin Armstrong was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader; she was the second wife of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” was originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental piece, with lyrics added by Don Raye in 1941. This popular song has been recorded more than 600 times, notable covers include those performed Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Desmond, Herbie Hancock, the Marsalis family and Earl Hines. When filing for divorce, Lillian sued Louis for custody of the song; Hardin won, though Armstrong continued to claim ownership for years after. This arrangement for concert band has been drawn from the jazz ensemble version by Rick Stitzel and features short solos for trumpet and alto sax. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

When I arranged this, I only had early elementary clarinet players so that part is entirely written below the break. It can be taken up an octave for more advanced players. There is a flute solo for your best flute player, it could also be omitted if necessary. The mallet part could also be omitted in a pinch. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Gioacchino Rossini composed the music 1835 originally for solo voice and piano. It is part of his song cycle Les soirées musicales with twelve pieces by various poets. This version was orchestrated and arranged in the key of A minor as prefered by prominent tenors like Luciano Pavarotti. It was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2017 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. The solo part was sung by Thai born tenor Nutthaporn Thammathi. It is directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and depicts Puyi's life from his ascent to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist Party. It premiered at the 1987 Tokyo International Film Festival, earning widespread positive reviews from critics and was also a commercial success. At the 60th Academy Awards, it won all nine Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also won several other accolades, including three BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, nine David di Donatello Awards, and a Grammy Award for its musical score, which features nine pieces composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, five by David Byrne, one from Cong Su, and a few incidental pieces of source music. 'Open The Door' occurs quite early in the film and can be considered to be one of the main themes, often performed instrumentally in concert by Ryuichi Sakamoto - as a song, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, it is not often heard, so this piece would work on many levels in a concert of film music.
