Carl Maria Von Weber wrote his Clarinet Concerto No.1 in 1811.The first movement was very innovative for its time, with some stylistic aspects characteristic of later composers like Felix Mendelssohn. He also wrote his Concertino for Clarinet and his Clarinet Concerto No.2 in the same year. This arrangement makes it available for soloist and concert band. This work of about 7-9 minutes in length from the Romantic period is lyrically very expressive, featuring large dynamic contrasts and extended range. Benjamin Coy’s fine arrangement for solo Trombone and Concert Band or Wind ensemble is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Karol Kurpiński (1785-1857) was a romanticist and one of the most revered composers before Frédéric Chopin, and helped to lay the foundations of a national style and prepared the ground for Polish music of the Romantic period. He’s a largely forgotten figure, but in his day he was Warsaw’s leading opera composer. A single-movement concerto by Weber’s Polish contemporary Karol Kurpiński is skilfully written, with a melancholy slow section whose melody is attractive. Elsewhere, the piece isn’t without its moments of note-spinning and overlong harmonic sequences, but it’s a welcome discovery nevertheless. The premiere of the work took place on the eve of Kurpiński's departure from Paris in 1823. Up to date only the first movement of the Clarinet Concerto, in the sonata allegro form with three themes, has survived. Concerto will be a fine way to demonstrate the clarinetist's potential for brilliant display and heartfelt lyricism.

Best known for his opera The Vampire, his music is very much in the romantic style and quite similar, in some ways, to Weber. It transcribes very nicely for Concert Band, giving everyone opportunities to enjoy themselves. Print the parts double-sided as presented (including title pages where supplied) and the page turns will work.
