This arrangement is ideal for brass or woodwind quartet but the flexible instrumentation makes it playable by various combinations of conventional wind instruments. An original work of mine entitled ''Gettin' Bluesy'' written for young concert band. Composed in a bluesy style with flattened 3rds & 7ths evident in the melody, this is a lovely piece with which to calm the atmosphere; and an excellent way to introduce a bluesy piece to your band members. The mood is melancholy, I did compose this after my cat sadly passed away when I was living in Norway. The melody is passed around the ensemble, akin to the conversational style one can observe in a Haydn string quartet. The brass have the opportunity for some transparent and soft muted work behind the melody scored in the woodwind. The bass guitar can be replaced with a double bass if desired. Your percussionists get the opportunity to play kit and also the vibes are used, a great work out all round! One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). This medley has been written with flexible scoring options permitting performance by a wide variety of wind instruments. While this selection may be performed as a quartet, best results are obtained by performance of at least five heterogeneous instruments. The full score has been revised and groups instruments in an easier to read format. The vibraphone part is optional but adds an additionally rich sonority and texture.Performance duration is about 4 minutes and 35 seconds utilizing the tempi suggested.
