The City was selected in 1911 over chief rival New Orleans by proclamation of President William Howard Taft. On December 12, 1913 the Victor Band recorded the march for the recording company of the same name. Corin was 26 years old when he penned this march and had already established himself as a concert pianist and composer with several musicals and orchestra recordings to his credit.

It vividly describes the appearance of The Galaxy (The Milky Way) with a stream of images: “Torrent of light, the “river of the air whose bed of “glimmering stars appear “Like gold and silver sands in some ravine / Where mountain streams have left their channels bare! Before sharing his poetic opinion of just what The Galaxy is, Longfellow dismisses the view of the eleventh-century Spaniard, who sees it as “the pathway for Santiago Matamoros* to “descend…in celestial armor to save the Christians from the Muslim Moors. It’s probably all you’ll ever need for thanksgiving and harvest festivals and the arrangements can be used for virtually any combination of wind instruments. This is an essential title for any band library or for any ensembles that are called upon to provide music for schools or churches. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. The piano part too means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The International School of Stavanger lies only one kilometer from a small fjord called Hafrsfjord where a monument, Swords in Stone, was constructed consisting of three large bronze swords stuck in an outcropping on the shore. The monument commemorates a battle which unified the Viking tribes of Norway under one king, Harald HAY=rfagre, or Harald the Fairhaired. According to legend, in 872 Harald invited the other tribal leaders to a meeting, then had his boats cut off their retreat and they battled until the other leaders submitted to Harald's rule. Harald then became the first king of Norway. The Swords of Stavanger seeks to provide a musical backdrop to this legend of Viking heroism and conquest.
