These three pieces (The Procession, Waltzing in the Rain and Tim's Dance) are presented here as a suite, but may of course be used individually. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat and pause. All three pieces are in Bb major (concert pitch), with no use of accidentals. Parts in this set: Part 1 (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet); Part 2 (Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet); Part 3 (Clarinet, Tenor Sax, F Horn); Part 4 (Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Sax, Trombone/Euphonium); Part 5 (Clarinet / Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, F Horn, Tuba); Glockenspiel; Cymbal & Triangle (Player 1) and Tambourine (Player 2); Snare Drum and Bass Drum. Less confident and/or early beginner players could also be included in the ensemble by using Part 5, as this part can be played using only the notes Bb and F (concert pitch). The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Our God, Our Help in Ages Past is a hymn by Isaac Watts and paraphrases the 90th Psalm of the Book of Psalms. It originally consisted of nine stanzas. In present usage, however, the hymn is usually limited to stanzas one, two, three, five, seven and nine (6 Verses) (Methodist books also include the original sixth stanza). In 1738, John Wesley in his hymnal, Psalms and Hymns, changed the first line of the text from Our God to O God. Both Watts' wording and Wesley's rewording remain in current use. After a short introduction by the band- upper woodwinds and horns, more instrumental groups enter on successive repeats with the climax in the 4th verse for the full band: a key change and an addition of a descant line. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is a Christmas song that originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.The music has been attributed to John Piersol McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written the song in 1867. The Johnny mentioned in the song who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son, John, who died as a child.
