Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. I composed and dedicated this piece to my 2022-2023 students of the band program at the Melaleuca Elementary School (FL). The work was premiered in May 2023.I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an ABA form, unisons, and duet textures. The drums and percussion students are featured in this piece having them playing alone. The piece includes a simple bachata (Latino genre) rhythmic pattern for the bongo drums because I have many Hispanic students as band members. This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method. Grade: 0.5.

The wind ensemble arrangement is scored for Piccolo, Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinet in Eb, Clarinets in Bb 1, 2 & 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon 1 & 2, Alto Sax 1 & 2, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Horn in F 1 & 2, Trumpet in Bb 1 & 2, Trombone 1 & 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Double Bass and 2 Percussion (Snare + Cymbals; and Bass Drum). Originally composed for violin & piano, alternate arrangements are available for tuba & piano, clarinet & piano, euphonium & piano, flugelhorn & piano and flute & piano. A guitar accompaniment is also available for violin, clarinet or alto flute in an arrangement by Rodrigo Baggio. This is a perfect piece for a youth band for a standard concert to add to your repertoire. This piece is written to accommodate the range level and rhythmic difficulty for an intermediate student. Have students practice listening to all the subtle parts and try to get the nuances to come alive to really propel this piece to its potential. If your students or your band has trouble with listening, playing through delicate passages, and playing as a brass choir or woodwind choir, this piece will help you work through those problems without having to worry about hard to play notes or rhythms. Themes from the Beach is a multi movement composition released in 2017 that captures wonderful scenes while hanging out on the Beach. The First Movement, Atmospheres, is a beautiful tranquil setting in the key of C major while the beauty portrays the humidity. The Second Movement, is a dance like movement of the scene while people are strolling in Paradise. The Key signature contrast is from D minor to D major and then to D minor once again. The last two movements are in the Key of F major. The third movement displays of what it is like to chill out in the sunlight. This deeply moving ballad is so beautiful and will portray the longest movement of the piece. The last and fourth movement is a 6/8 Dance of getting yourself exposed to the sunlight.Themes from the Beach Suspended Cymbals and Snare Drum Parts. 5 pages long and is listed in the following movements. A triumphant fanfare for bands with a strong brass section! When I spoke with Ian about writing another piece for us, I suggested a fanfare - an easy idea when you have 26 players in the brass section. After receiving an electronic version of the piece, I realized it loosely followed the musical form known as a rondo. The opening fanfare returns four times in the piece, while the primary melody returns three times after its initial statement. Each return is different than the original statement. A third, darker theme in the lower voices, is played twice in the piece, which offers a nice contrast to the opening fanfare and primary theme. It is not incredibly technically demanding, and with limited range, but musically fulfilling. The challenge mainly lies in precision of articulations and dotted-eighth-sixteenth rhythms, as well as with individual entrances. It works well as an opening to a concert or as a filler. Dragon Warrior is a piece for beginners, as it only uses the first six notes typically learned on wind instruments (Concert Bb-Concert G). I wrote this to be a piece to get kids excited about playing their instruments and making music together (it's definitely not "high art"). It also appeals to the imagination and a lot of what we see in film/tv and video games these days. If your speakers are powerful enough you could play along with a larger group of students, maybe as a Fun Friday activity.

It is derived from a set of brass band parts that are held in the Library of Congress. This is for full modern concert band. A very enjoyable piece to warm-up an audience. If you are able to hear the .mp3 recording you will get a good idea of how this piece was first presented in modern form. It was first published ca. 1857 and found it's way into the band books of Union Bands during the civil war.

The work was premiered in May 2023.I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an ABA form, unisons, and duet textures. The Score has written a Drum Set part, but I had two students playing the music (one student for the snare, the other for the bass drum). This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method. Grade: 0.5.

The Battle of the Alamo was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican Troops under commodore and President Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna, launched an assault on the Alamo Mission. On this day, All of the Texican troops had fallen. Before seeking revenge Santa Anna had accomplished a long felt desire to take over what was righteously his. This battle ended in a Mexican victory, making it an essential part of United States History. Containing Latin flourishes, this piece celebrates the lives lost, while vividly imagining a hot dry battlefield in Texas. Composer Jay Coles best puts this to a musical setting. This will keep your snares busy and other percussionist counting. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
