A mix of fear and wonderment assault them. They run. All these emotions and movements are translated by quick scales and texture. In fact, the pirates, like us, don't know what is happening: in front of them, there is a shipwreck, rests of a banquet, corpses, and a couple - a beautiful woman that looks like Artemis and a wounded man at her feet.

During Malaysia's third Covid-19 Lockdown, in January 2021, I composed a short piece for solo trombone each day for 14 days, performing them each evening in an online stream from my apartment balcony. This work fleshes out the themes from Lockdown Miniatures #1 and #4. The first two themes, from Lockdown Miniatures #1 (subtitled Here We Go Again), reflect the angst and uncertainty of beginning yet another lockdown — with all businesses once again closed, police roadblocks preventing movement beyond the neighborhood, and all human contact reduced to a small screen. The third theme, from Lockdown Miniatures #4 (subtitled Loss), is meant to express the raw emotion associated with losing loved ones over the previous ten months. This piece was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miran Vaupotic, on 26 February 2022 as part of a project by Parma Recordings. The album, titled Sparks: Eye of London, was released in October 2022 on Navona Records.

Instrumentation: 3222-4231-timp-2perc-hp-chorus-strings Program note:It has been a wonderful two years of thinking, learning and working on my Continental Harmony Project with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings.The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan.The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song.The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Drunken Polka, are optional.

A concerto for Double Bass and orchestra in the traditional fast - slow – fast concerto format. While not overly challenging for the bass soloist, it does explore, to a degree, the upper reaches of the instrument as well as sounding the beautiful low range. The first movement is that might be called Neo – Classical, opening with an 8-measure solo in a Largo or slow tempo. The tempo then changes to Allegro (fast) for the balance of the movement. The movement ends as it began with the double bass playing alone. The second movement is a jazz waltz. In 9/8, it opens with the soloist playing pizzicato against a rhythmic cord progression. The bass and cello sections pick this up to provide a ground upon which the balance of the movement is played over. The second movement is in the relative minor of Bb which is G minor. A haunting melody is introduced by the bass and doubled by the strings. This melody is replayed by various instruments as the Bass Soloist plays variations on this theme. The harp and the bass solo end the movement. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. This movement is Andantino; however, it is a spirited. Written in cut time, where the half note equals 92 beats per minute. The melody is introduced by the woodwinds with the harp accompanying. The strings and brass join in as the woodwinds repeat the melody. Finally, the bass solo takes charge of the melody using it as a theme and variation. The harp is used extensively in this concerto providing harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic support for the bass. Written in 2015, the concerto is a new work, however, it is not experimental music. It uses the standard orchestral instruments playing in the standard fashion. It is replete with modern harmonic sounds and chord progressions. As concerto's go, this one is not overly difficult providing the bassist with a starting point as a soloist. It does require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument as the music traverses most of the instrument’s range. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

DIVINUM MYSTERIUM is a chant tune dating to the 12th century which is associated with the hymn, Of the Father's Love Begotten, based on the Latin hymn, Corde natus ex parentis, written by Prudentius in the late 4th / early 5th century. This is thus one of the very oldest texts and tunes still sung in our churches today. The shape and flow of this arrangement, which includes quotations from CANTIQUE de NOEL (O Holy Night) – Adolphe Adam (1844), was strongly influenced by what one writer described as the strong wave shapes of the tune. I’ve attempted to make these waves a significant feature of the piece, featured in both the constant crescendo/decrescendos and the interweaving of the two tunes. And, just as ocean waves don’t arrive in steady rhythms, these musical waves are variable – sometimes closely spaced, sometimes not, and sometimes overlapping. The unique character of each of the three major sections is implied in their headings: (1) with mystery and wonder, (2) Joyfully – a child is born, and (3) contemplative – God is with us. The opening section portrays the mystery of the trinity (the hymn text was written as an apology for the Nicene Creed) mixed with the wonder of the Creator God lying in a manger. Since the tune is derived from medieval chant, I wanted this section to reflect the loose metrical nature of that genre, so the melodic phrasing should predominate over any sense of meter up to letter C. The initial tonal and metrical ambiguity and the fractured melodic lines gradually meld into conventional tonality and clear statements of the two main themes. Don’t let the poco rit. just before C be too poco. Build a definite sense of tension in anticipation of the Presto section. The Presto section presents the first complete statement of the main theme. I felt a strong, rhythmic treatment should follow the ambiguity of the opening to reflect the joy of the Messiah’s incarnation realized. However, the gravity of the text demands avoidance of frivolity and banality. Thus, I used a combination of the long, flowing lines with a syncopated pulse and echoing rhythms to produce what I hope is a fresh but still reverent treatment of this ancient hymn – one that produces a kaleidoscope of tonal color. Arriving at the third section at letter F, the asymmetrical pulse gradually shifts into a straight 3 pattern. The slower tempo and return of the secondary theme call us to reflect on the import of God now with us. The marking of Let off the gas and coast to the end is a word picture of how the tempo should draw to a close, as would an expert helmsman allow the ship’s momentum to stop just as it taps the dock. One parting moment is provided to savor the woodwinds closing phrase from CANTIQUE de NOEL. Robert Myers S.D.G. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.1119919). Festival:(Time 7:05) This is an original, previously unpublished piece, composed specifically for the ICF festival 2022. It is a programmatic piece in 3 sections, with each section being a description of some aspect of the word Festival. I have taken the broadest definition of the word festival to give as much scope for variety as possible. The first section opens with ‘sunrise’ on the day of the festival, shown by long-held open fourth chords, with the snapping of the violin pizzicatos (perhaps) being the rattle of tent lines/guys. The bass clarinet solo then shows people waking up and stretching, yawning and just before Letter A, the descending figures throughout the ensemble bring us all together to start the festival. From Letter A, one sets off at a marching pace through the crowds. We hear a mish-mash of vendors’ calls overlaying each other, repeating variations of the same motif and this little tune develops as it moves around the festival site, sometimes loud and sometimes faint. At some point, of course, arguments break out (e.g. Letter B between the strings and brass), but generally, the mood is business-like. At Letter C, there comes a parade of minstrels through the field which eventually fades off into the distance. At Letter D, we look at a different kind of festival. Not necessarily religious, but certainly spiritual. The harp and bell sounds evoke far-eastern temples while the string harmonics evoke an eerie stillness which is broken only by the melodic fragments (based on the 4ths of the first section) which pass around the orchestra. The theme is first heard on the Cor Anglais (echoed by the harp) which gives it a warmer, less piercing, sound than the oboe. The quartal chords at b.149 denote the vast mysteries of the cosmos. As our gaze widens, we are suddenly brought back to Earth with a rush as yet another kind of festival is evoked. This time we are looking briefly at the Indian subcontinent. Where fakirs charm snakes and young boys climb ropes only to disappear. The third and final section returns us to the British Isles, where the Celts are making merry in a festival. There is dancing, singing, feasting and drinking a-plenty. And, just when you think it’s all over, there’s a final push to get another dance going. The final chords are a reminder of the opening as we finish our revels as the sun descends below the horizon in a beautiful sunset.

Legacy is a three movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission and premiered by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate is quieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!. A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries bring the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressive the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCollough’s book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato that creates a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

The resulting affect action is described as rage or fury, combined with a state of mind of uncontrolled excitement in the sense of being beside oneself or out of one's senses.The personification of these affects was in Greek and Roman mythology with the trio of vengeance goddesses, the Erinyens (Latin furia) called: Alekto (the incessant, the never resting), Megaira (German: Megäre, the envious anger) and Tisiphone (the Vengeance avenging the murder, represented with a dog's head and bat's wings), and another, that of Nemesis (the reconciling justice). Pictures by Albrecht Dürer, Hieronymus Bosch, Tizian, Peter Paul Rubens, William Hamilton, Johann Heinrich Fuessli, Franz von Stuck, Alfred Kubin, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon, Yongbo Zhao and many others are proof of this.They found their way into the literature of Virgil (Aeneis), Dante (Divine Comedy) or John Milton (Paradise Lost). Goethe lets them appear in Faust II, Schiller (Die Kraniche des Ibykus) and many others refer to them directly or in a modified form, such as Kurt Tucholsky (Gripsholm Palace), Alfred Döblin (Berlin Alexanderplatz), Max Frisch (Homo Faber) or Jean-Paul Sartre (The Flies).In opera, they become an important element in highly dramatic scenes, especially on themes with a mythological or historical background, often also related to the underworld, as in Monteverdi (Il Ritorno d`Ulisse in Patria), Lully (Armide), Gluck (Orpheus and Euridice) or Purcell (Dido and Aeneas). Haendel dedicates an aria to them in Rinaldo, the Furie Terribili. Mozart also uses it in The Magic Flute, in his aria Der Hölle Rache by the Queen of the Night.Furies appear up to the present in various forms, in comics, fantasy novels, computer games, or kung fu films of the 70s (Furies on the yellow river). They are even popular as plastic children's toys, mostly in particularly frightening and creepy presentations (Matchbox/Fighting Furies or Warhammer/Erinnye). This remarkable history and reception inspired Rainer Fabich to create this new orchestral work from his MYThS series. PEGASUS - Ride on Wings, ULYSSES - Prélude to an Odyssey and THE AMONZS - Myth and Projection have already been released. As the title suggests, this is frantically wild music (Allegro molto vivace) that seems to run away, like an action film with fast motives and runs of strings and woodwinds, combined with strong accents of brass and massive percussion Set. Alternations of straight and asymmetrical beats illustrate erratic sequences of movement, as are typical of scenes with the highest intensity, especially in films (e.g. a chase). In the jazzy middle section, the furies calm down a little, before they pick up speed again in a bombastic third section and increase to the point of ecstasy.
