Featuring beautiful melodies that soar over driving, syncopated rhythms, this piece makes for an exciting overture for any Pops, Classics, or Canadian Content programme.From the composer: This Suite is written in three contiguous movements, named for Vancouver, BC’s most iconic features: ‘City’, ‘Sea’, and ‘Mountains’. ‘City’ opens with a flourish of harmonic architecture which morphs into a decidedly cosmopolitan syncopated groove, reflecting the city’s bustling energy. ‘Sea’ features a simple, plaintive melody supported by gently undulating waves of harmony which slowly build to a tempestuous climax and then recede into calmness. ‘Mountains’ begins as a gentle stroll through the North Shore’s idyllic peaks. Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations.The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn,this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. The theme serves asthe basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structuraltemplate for each. Also, each variation contains material referring backspecifically to the previous variation.The opening theme is declamatory and massive. The first variation is fastand limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The thirdvariation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifthvariation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowlyregains its declamatory nature before a brief and intense coda ends the workin a blaze.This item is the score and the solo part only. Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic.The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo.The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section.This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section.The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments,emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl. In contrast to the more sublime Ruhevoll (and the 4th movement Molto Adagio) Marches utilizes many aspects of the march in various settings, from large brass and woodwind circus venues to trios of soloists, while also encompassing the somber funeral procession. Marches opens the brass and low strings in a dogfight; the brass fire short staccato blasts as 'cellos and basses answer with long lyrical lines setting the pace until the cat and mouse game ends with the low strings driving their way to the trio. When the three soloists finish their introductory theme they are answered by the full orchestra taking the theme and surrounding it with all the boisterous bells and whistles of a circus march! But the reality is that marches are - at their core - war music, and the waste that war causes has to be addressed in the funeral march. These themes are all cycled through once again, with a coda that cleverly ties things up.
