As the piece continues to evolve, it becomes clear that there is actually a chaotic and destructive nature in love. Based off the texts of Joseph Campbell, this is a musical representation of the hero’s journey with a twist: The hero becomes fully aware of the cycle they are both blessed and cursed to follow. With every step, the hero fights the tropes of mythology, but can they escape their own fate?Movement I: The Calling introduces our main theme naively. It's done in a style reflective of all action/adventure genres: romantically boastful, one dimensional and confident. But as the call to adventure imposes itself on the hero, the hero begins to think that all is not what it seems to be.Movement II: The Motions is a set of trials where the hero experiences great loss, triumphant battles, and a renewed image. Yet, that is just the cycle they expected and its trite conclusion and three act distinction troubles the hero.Movement III: A Fool’s Reckoning is a response to being a pawn in someone else’s story. It takes all learned elements and tries to distort them to be something new and different. But what if this transformation was all part of the same cycle? The hero fights until they forget what they fight for. Reluctantly resilient, they carry on wondering if there was ever anything heroic about them at all.

Throughout the work, the trombone is placed into a variety of different musical contexts—sometimes with bleakness and sometimes with warmth. The work begins with the tubular bells alone, presenting the principal musical material of the work. The strings enter with a suspended tapestry, through which the trombone plays its opening melodies. In this section, the trombone has a cantorial role—singing and interacting with the orchestra. These opening musical ideas are developed as the trumpet, horn, and clarinet join the trombone in soloistic roles. A signal gesture on the trumpet is heard once, interrupting the tapestry. When the signal is heard again, the music accelerates into the second section. The second section is fast and bell-like as the trombone sings excited lines through ringing masses of sound. Whirring figurations emerge in the winds and are picked up by the strings. The sectiongrows wilder until it climaxes in hammer chords. From this, the trumpet, bells, and trombone emerge—maintaining and propelling the energy of thesection. Gradually, the energy is released, leading into the third section. The third section is chorale-like, combining again suspended sounds in the strings with harmonic motion in the winds in brass. The trombone again plays a cantorial role. A build up of energy occurs at the end of this section, leading into the fourth and final section—the cadenza. The trombone bursts into the cadenza, not with a forceful shout, but with a whisper. The work winds down to its conclusion—without a loss of speed or energy, but rather by the increase of silence. At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. Presently he lives in a castle in the central mountains of Costa Rica.
