She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Fire Dance has 3 sections, following an A-B-A or simple ternary form: 1. Furious 2. Contemplative 3. Tempo IThe title of this composition might encourage the listener to conjure up visions of a primitive tribal fire ritual, or possibly an entertaining dance performance with fiery hoops and batons. Both are valid reactions and neither of these interpretations would expect a specific program in the music. But an environmental theme can be discerned in the composition by interpreting the opening section as depicting a “furious” wildfire, while the quiet middle section “contemplates” the scene of devastation left behind in the fire’s wake with idyllic memories of what it was like before the fire. The final section would recall the fire’s fury and serve as a warning for the future if something isn't done to combat wildfire-causing climate change.Fire Dance is scored for solo violin, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, bells, timpani, 2 percussion, piano, and strings. This work completely captivated me and within 2 weeks I simply dropped out of ordinary life. When this author is classified as a second-hand composer, I am the first to defend him. Awww.....find something like this these days. Of course, this composition has a certain amount of influence from Rimsky-Korsokov, Borodin, and Rachmaninov. But this is still the musical language of that time and the atmosphere created by the above-mentioned geniuses of Russian music.

This orchestral suite was composed by me from three numbers of Transcendental Etudes, op. 11 S. Lyapunov - Berceuse, Rondo des Sylphes & Lesghinka. These three different plays combine perfectly due to their contrasts and different artistic images. Translating these virtuoso opuses to a full orchestra, I had to deal with many technical difficulties purely for the piano, which had to be adapted for the orchestra, while I had to create new lines and voices and even compose something. This work completely captivated me with the talent, ingenuity and delightful imagination of its author. I am sure that this composition could decorate many orchestral programs, giving them freshness and great emotional intensity.

Based off the texts of Joseph Campbell, this is a musical representation of the hero’s journey with a twist: The hero becomes fully aware of the cycle they are both blessed and cursed to follow. With every step, the hero fights the tropes of mythology, but can they escape their own fate?Movement I: The Calling introduces our main theme naively. It's done in a style reflective of all action/adventure genres: romantically boastful, one dimensional and confident. But as the call to adventure imposes itself on the hero, the hero begins to think that all is not what it seems to be.Movement II: The Motions is a set of trials where the hero experiences great loss, triumphant battles, and a renewed image. Yet, that is just the cycle they expected and its trite conclusion and three act distinction troubles the hero.Movement III: A Fool’s Reckoning is a response to being a pawn in someone else’s story. It takes all learned elements and tries to distort them to be something new and different. But what if this transformation was all part of the same cycle? The hero fights until they forget what they fight for. Reluctantly resilient, they carry on wondering if there was ever anything heroic about them at all.

Another of Delius’s best-known works falls into the same category as The Walk to the Paradise Garden, being an interlude from an opera that is now rarely heard in full. Koanga predates A Village Romeo and Juliet by just four years and comes from the composer’s Bohemian years in Paris during the 1890s. Delius himself considered it his best opera to date. It was his third after Irmelin and The Magic Fountain and it drew on his experiences in the orange groves of Florida. The hero of the opera, Koanga, is an African prince and voodoo priest, now working as a slave on a Mississippi plantation. Delius incorporated a traditional Martinique dance from the seventeenth century into the plot, for which he wrote a small musical interlude, borrowing from something he had written earlier in his first orchestral work, the Florida Suite. When his trusty companion and scribe Eric Fenby arranged the interlude for orchestra in 1938 – some forty years later – it quickly became another hardy perennial on concert programmes up and down the land.

The almost traditionally tonic idiom of the work is a turning point for the composer’s thinking to more simple forms and easy to comprehend musical language. The tempos (Maestoso con moto – Poco meno mosso – L’ istesso tempo ma espressivo e tranquillo – Lento – Tempo primo) and the overall character is one of a romantic concerto. It is dedicated to Manos Hatzidakis and composer believes that it has something from him and his music.

Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic.The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo.The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section.This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section.The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments,emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights.
