A Dream Deferred is a clarinet concerto written in response to what I perceive as the growing racism, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, religious discrimination and antagonism to the most vulnerable in our society. The first movement, If Not Now, When? is a whirl of activity, questioning, often angry. The second, The Weariness, the Fear and the Resistance, starts with a bluesy melody before growing into an eerie section that is followed by a macabre waltz. The first melody returns at the end. The last movement, Nevertheless, We Must Persist, is a march towards justice. A quite demanding concerto from a technical point of view, unfolds many sonorities for both solo instruments as well as orchestra, including dense texture, polyphony, and a flavor of minimalism just before the end. After an agitated orchestra introduction, the flute enters with a lamenting and painful melody. The guitar takes over by introducing the core motivic elements of the work. Flute and guitar join in a chase-like duet with virtuosic passages in both instruments, accompanied by the orchestra in a frenzied commotion. The slow and almost distorted cadenza (with the snare drum) comes as a surprise and at the same time as a moment of relief. The tension increases as propulsive rhythms drive through the finale and build with rapid agitation to the end. The title of the work, Constitution Article 91, refers to a part of the former Greek constitution used by the dictatorship between 1967 and 1974 to abolish democracy in Greece. Certain rhythms in the work come from a fearsome and agitated speech that the dictator delivered to the academicians in 1973 following the students movement against the tyranny. Constitution Article 91 is a real tour de force for the soloists. In this colorful work, Apostolos Paraskevas shows us that a meeting point can be found between advanced contemporary idioms and evocations of an almost popular style. This music is notable for its rhythmic verve, its melodic grace, and its emotional depth. It has genuine substance, but speaks directly to the listener-a rare and welcome achievement. My completion of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) brings to life the tantalizing fragments he left for the third and fourth movements. The third movement follows closely Schubert's surviving short score, where his intricate melodic ideas are expanded with a full orchestration that honors his harmonic language. This movement, true to Schubert’s symphonic style, carries a lively yet graceful energy, interspersed with contrasting themes that reflect both joy and contemplation.The fourth movement begins with a nod to Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, seamlessly transitioning from the grandeur of the third movement. Drawing from the overture’s distinctive opening, I introduce a bold and majestic theme that acts as a foundation for the final movement. From here, the symphony unfolds into a dramatic and richly textured conclusion. My aim in this movement was to capture Schubert’s gift for lyrical, expansive melody while incorporating the dynamic tension and rhythmic drive that characterizes his symphonic writing.Throughout the fourth movement, I intertwine moments of serene beauty with powerful orchestral climaxes, echoing the drama of the symphony’s first movement. The use of Schubert’s melodic genius is central to this completion, with soaring strings and resonant winds building to a thrilling finale. The symphony concludes with a recapitulation of the opening theme from the first movement, bringing a sense of unity and closure to the entire work.The entire symphony, now lasting 50 minutes, forms a cohesive continuation of Schubert's original vision. This completion fills the second half of the concert program, offering a balanced and dramatic conclusion to the work Schubert began but never had the chance to finish.

Ebb and Flow harks back to the composer’s years at the City University of New York. The work was completed in 1990 and revised in 2022 for this video score. A colorful and dramatic work, Ebb and Flow is based on two main themes: the first of which is heard at the very onset in the lower strings, and later, a more subdued and lyrical theme is presented. Transitions between these sections are fluid and contain moments of tension and resolution, highlighting the contrasts and interplay between the two states. Ultimately, Ebb and Flow as a musical composition aims to evoke a sense of movement, contemplation, and emotional resonance, capturing the essence of the natural ebb and flow phenomenon through the music. El Cerro de la Muerte is translated to The Mountain of Death and it is the name of a mountain range in Costa Rica. When I was growing up, it was necessary to drive through it in order to go to the beach on the west coast. The mountain is filled with pictoresque sights as well as deep, dangerous cliffs with tough, steep hills that are hard even for cars. This piece is a mini tone poem describing a journey through this mountain, with some quotations from Verdi's Dies Irae as well as Beethoven's fifth, and Paganini's Capriccio No. 24. It is a fun piece.

He's lived it every day of his life. And you hear it in every note of his Americana Symphony. For the majority of his solo career, O'Connor has dedicated himself to composing for orchestra: he has written six full-length concertos, several orchestral suites and string orchestra compositions, and most recently his first Symphony.David Wallace, Juilliard School faculty member and Senior Teaching Artist with the New York Philharmonic, comments on the overall characteristics of O'Connor's music: The Americana Symphony combines historical narrative with classical and folk variation principles. Â All the themes use the same principle notes (D, C sharp, B flat and A) and could be considered friendly or fiendish depending on your musical taste. At the climactic ending all the themes are layered on top of each other. It was composed for the U. C. Berkeley Orchestra and received an Eisner Prize from the U. C. Berkeley faculty.
