The Huron Carol (or Twas in the Moon of Wintertime) is a Canadian Christmas hymn (Canada's oldest Christmas song), written probably in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people; the song's original Huron title is Jesous Ahatonhia (Jesus, He is born). The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid).[Wikipedia]This is an arrangement for full Orchestra Band with an optional piano part included. A descant part can be played on Flute/Piccolo and Clarinet in the 2nd Verse and the on Trumpet, Flute/Piccolo and Clarinet in the 4th Verse. Garth Williams has taken this melody and has presented it using a number of different forms, the canon being most dominant. Once this melody is established he introduces God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and indeed, finishes the composition with considerable exuberance. The score is presented with an additional Third Violin part if violas are in short supply.
