J. Thomas reached No. 1 on charts in the United States, Canada and Norway, and reached No. 38 on the UK Singles Chart. It topped the Billboard Hot 100for four weeks in January 1970 and was also the first American No. 1 hit of the 1970s. The song also spent seven weeks atop the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.Billboard ranked it as the No. 4 song of 1970. According to Billboard magazine, it had sold over 2 million copies by March 14, 1970, with eight-track and cassette versions also climbing the charts. It won an Oscar for Best Original Song.[5] Bacharach also won Best Original Score.

The famous theme from the Largo of the Symphony No. 9 was adapted into the spiritual-like song Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvořák's pupil William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. This arrangement is based on Dvořák's original orchestration of the Largo as well as the cuts and changes made by Fisher for his piano edition. This orchestration is perfectly compatible with Fisher's piano score, which the singer may use. The instrumentation is 2.2(II=corA.).2.2 - 3.2.3.1 - timp - strings + solo singer (preferably baritone) In the UK, the theme gained traction among the general public after its use in an advert for the Hovis bakery. In 1981, Don Williams would record a different song written to the melody, by Roger Cook. The resulting composition, Miracles, would peak at number 4 on the Billboard country singles chart that July, and also reach number 32 on the adult contemporary chart.

In the film, the song is performed by Tony Award winner, Filipina singer and actress Lea Salonga as Fa Mulan. An accompanying music video for Reflection was included as a bonus to the Disney Gold Classic Collection DVD release of the film in February 2000. Reflection has received highly positive reviews, with critics highlighting its emotional writing and Salonga's vocals. A single version of the song was recorded by American singer Christina Aguilera and became her debut single. She was 17 at the time it was released. The single's commercial success funded Aguilera's debut album from RCA, in addition to gaining her credibility amongst established writers and producers. Releases of the single were limited, which resulted in the track charting only on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. An accompanying music video for the song was included on the DVD release of Mulan. Aguilera has performed the track on four televised performances, including at the CBS This Morning show, which saw her gain the attention of songwriter Diane Warren. A later, the remix by Eric Kupper was released. In 2020, Aguilera re-recorded the song for the live adaption of Mulan.

Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1043121). I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and released on his album Going Public in 1977. Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976 after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975. It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977. Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976. The original version was recorded by Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with the Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by teen idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Johnston. Cassidy's version reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year. Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God, and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in everyone. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson. Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Cash Box said of Manilow's version Good work Barry describing the song as melodic, ballad-like beginning grows into an operatic crescendo, all done in clear production that all age groups will appreciate.

American composer, James Nathaniel Holland, brings a ballet adapted from the first century Roman novel by Gaius Petronius (cir. 50 A.D.) to the stage. An entertaining ballet for adults (not suitable for general audiences under the age of 18), celebrating the male ballet dancer's physique and a laugh at our own human sexuality. The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Conceptually it all began a year ago when I came upon a book edited by Jonathan Safran Foer, A Convergence of Birds: Original Fiction and Poetry Inspired by the Work of Joseph Cornell. It is a beautiful book for the mind and the eyes: imaginative short stories and poetry alongside magnificently rendered color-plate reproductions of several Joseph Cornell box constructions. The book led me to a biography by Deborah Solomon, Utopia Parkway, and the germ of a symphonic work for Joseph Cornell was born.Symphony No. 5 ... Utopia Parkway is in five movements.I. Allegro marcato 3708 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NYII. Lento The Enchanted Wanderer ... for Hedy LaMarr, 1941III. Avian scherzo Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery, 1943IV. Allegro ... à la Can-can A Pantry Ballet ... for Jacques Offenbach, 1942 V. Moderato Apotheosis: Mary Baker Eddy, Christian ScientistJoseph Cornell lived most of his life with his mother and brother Robert at 3807 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NY. The first movement, Allegro marcato, is a musical rendition of Joseph’s daily commute into Manhattan where he frequently visited dime stores, junk shops, used book stores, the New City Public Library, art galleries, movie houses and restaurants like Bickford’s and Schraft’s.The Enchanted Wanderer is a collage work on paper by Joseph Cornell – a tribute to Hedy Lamarr. Hollywood fascinated Cornell. He made several box constructions as tributes to movie stars like Lauren Bacall, Jennifer Jones, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, etc.Avian scherzo. Many of Cornell’s boxes featured cutout pictures of parakeets, parrots and cockatoos. Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery is an especially evocative box of his aviary series. There are four birds in it, amidst other odds and ends. A number is attached to each one. There is a crack in the glass encasement – as if hit by a bullet. Blood splatters from the head of one of the birds. . In between the shooting gallery music, there is a Trio: a requiem for the dead cockatoo.Allegro ... à la Can-can. Cornell attended the ballet fervently. He made many box constructions inspired by ballet dancers: Fanny Cerrito, Marie Taglioni, Tamara Toumanova, Zizi Jeanmaire, Allegra Kent, etc. A Pantry Ballet for Jacques Offenbach is a very funny box with five red plastic lobsters in tutus. I provided a polka as background music. This movement is dedicated to Allegra Kent – a friend and confidante of Cornell.Joseph Cornell was an active member of the Christian Science Church for all of his adult life. He attended services regularly, and taught Sunday-school classes. For a while he even worked as an attendant in a Christian Science Reading Room in Great Neck, NY. In the Christian Science Hymnal I found several hymns written by the founder, Mary Baker Eddy, set to music by a number of different composers. I wrote a new tune to her hymn, Shepherd, show me how to go. The last movement, Apotheosis, is a theme and variations on this tune. Published by Dario Duarte (A0.1080608). The piece consists of a description of a small tableau with an autumn theme in an idyllic town. In the region of the Latin American Andes, more precisely the tableau called ayacuchano is an art form very representative of the folklore of the region. Taking this idea of micro-stories, the work narrates four scenes of a day that begins at dawn and ends with the town's festival. Each story corresponds to the four sections of the music, which are performed successively. First tableau: Autumn morning lights. The change of season is perceived in the ashen morning lights of the autumn season, the sun rises lightly with a slight warmth, giving the ochre color that dominates the landscape a sense of tranquility and reflectiveness. The mood of this piece is one of contemplation. Second tableau: Noon in the town The tableau opens. It is midday. The whole town is busy with preparations for the harvest festival celebration. The music goes by with the sounds of the town and the joy of the inhabitants for the important festivity they are about to share as a community. The whole town is a great hustle and bustle. You hear barrel organs, feel the excitement of hanging banners and decorating the houses for the main parade. Third tableau. Little song for siesta time. A nostalgic voice sings an old folk song to lull the children to sleep. The voices of other adults of the town intertwine to sing a song to the sleeping children. It is a tender song that recovers the stillness and tranquility of the town at the hour when everyone returns to their homes to rest. Fourth tableau: Night of celebration. Harvest Festival The first chords of the town band can be heard in the distance, a melody invites to enter with enthusiasm to the place where the festival will take place. The dance begins, the band plays energetically and everyone participates in a dance of joy. In the most important moment of the party, the town's hymn is played, everyone joins in one voice to sing the song that distinguishes them. And now: the announcement of the winners of the harvest contest. Someone is honored and everyone applauds vigorously. Then the dancing continues again.
