This CD contains Mark O'Connor's latest orchestral works: Americana Symphony Variations on Appalachia Waltz(2006) and Concerto No. 6 Old Brass (2003). Sony Classical//BMG label director Gilbert Hetherwick explains; Dvorak and Copland painted symphonic landscapes using melodies inspired by the Americana tradition, and Mark O'Connor actually comes from that tradition itself. He's lived it every day of his life. And you hear it in every note of his Americana Symphony. For the majority of his solo career, O'Connor has dedicated himself to composing for orchestra: he has written six full-length concertos, several orchestral suites and string orchestra compositions, and most recently his first Symphony.David Wallace, Juilliard School faculty member and Senior Teaching Artist with the New York Philharmonic, comments on the overall characteristics of O'Connor's music: The Americana Symphony combines historical narrative with classical and folk variation principles. The movements, Call of the Mockingbird, Trail of Tears, and Fanfare for the Volunteer reflect on broad themes relating to the history and culture of the state. The work was released in 1999 on a cd for Sony Classical performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra titled by its final movement Fanfare for the Volunteer.Call of the Mockingbird; The evocations of nature and landscape. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. Since relocating to Southern Chile in 2016, composer Edgar Girtain has been immersed in the music of hisadopted home, frequently performing with folk musicians in rural areas through the Los Lagos region. Two Andean Airs draws on a folkmusic style native to northern Chile (cultures of the Andean Plateau). The first piece was drawn from the third of composer's well-known Trios for Flute, Violin and Cello, while the second comes from a suite of Huaynos composed and arranged for a latin-american orchestra of students that the composer co-directs in Puerto Montt. Both are outdoor style pieces, typical of what might be heard performed by brass or pan-flute bands at religious festivals in the deserts of northern Chile.

There are versions for Brass Quintet & String Orchestra in my on-line stores.Oj, svijetla majska zoro (Montenegrin Cyrillic: „Ој, Ñвијетла мајÑка зоро, trans. Oh, Bright Dawn of May) is the official National anthem of Montenegro adopted in 2004. Before becoming the anthem, it was a popular folk song of the Montenegrins, with many variations of its text. The oldest one is dated to the 2nd half of the 19th century, known as Oh, Bright Dawn of Heroism, oh!, a popular Montenegrin folk song.It was played in public for the first time in 1863 in the national theater in Belgrade. It was a component song of the Battle of Grahovo or blood feud in Montenegro (Бој на Грахову или крвна оÑвета у Црној Гори) heroic play in three parts. It is unknown if the text’s authors are also the play’s, namely the following Montenegrin composer/writers: the father of Marko Car Jovan Car and an unknown Obrad Vitković. The play and the Montenegrin folk song was also played/sung in the National Theater again in 1870 and 1876. Its first record in Montenegro itself dates to 1887, when it was included into the regular school program of Montenegrin national songs for pupils in the 3rd grade. It was reconfirmed in the teacher’s plan for Montenegrin schools of 1888, which speculates that it must have been an established folk song for decades by then.Sekule Drljević, party strongman of a minor political party which was active in the Yugoslavian Kingdom in Montenegro known as the Montenegrin Federalist Party, rewrote the text and published it in 1937 in the book of then’s Croatian writer of Montenegrin origins Savić Marković Å tedimlija known as Crvena Hrvatska (Red Croatia), which confounded the thesis not of a Serb ethnic origin of the Montenegrins, which was the dominant one back then, but rather from the Croats. Its name was Eternal Ours… (VjeÄna naÅ¡a). When Nikola Hercigonja wrote down Oh, Bright Dawn of May shortly after WWII ended after 1945, he erroneously concluded that Drljević was the original wholesale author of this song, which also led to its considerable decline in popularity as a Montenegrin folk song altogether.The song survived until today under various names as a popular Montenegrin folk song under the name Oh, Bright Dawn of May (Oj svijetla majska zoro). A lot of the brass are in unison or octaves so you don’t have to have four french horns to play this piece. Though four horns would be NICE. The flexibility in this arrangement is that this modern film score approach means you can play this arrangement when you only have a couple trumpets and a horn BUT you can absolutely play this piece with four horns, tons of trumpets and a huge low brass section and it will be gigantic! Most of the giant action films you hear today record with 6-8 (French) horns and they are often playing in unison or octaves. That is part of the massive sound. So, this arrangement can absolutely grow with your group. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1049004). Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. The attached mp3 was performed by the German saxophonist Jurgen Demmler with pianist Peter Grabinger in 1996. Duration: 20’.

Written in 2007 for the Luton Symphony Orchestra in Bedfordshire, England, the Anasazi Overture is a fun and crowd-pleasing concert overture that combines beautiful Coplandesque string playing with exciting Hans Zimmer style brass. The piece is based on two Native American folk tunes; A Hopi lullaby and a Pueblo corn grinding song. The instrumentation of the piece is without percussion as the original intent of the work was to Make it cheap to play. It features double winds and brass with the exception of a 3rd horn part. The level of playing for the strings is quite advanced and the piece is suitable for all-county, all-state, youth orchestras, semiprofessional and professional groups.Some of the advanced techniques required involve heavy double-stopping and high shifting positions for the strings and Hans Zimmer style cuivre for the horns (NOTE: NOT STOPPED HORN) as well as upward rips.The included MP3 recording is the first live performance of the work by the amateur group it was composed for, but I am confident that this piece will prove to be fun and exciting to play for even professional orchestras. This set contains 1 of each part. Permission is given to create copies of the parts for each player in the orchestra as needed. The work has been quite popular with those who have played it.
