Scenes from the Sea is a suite in five movements for full orchestra, each of which lasts approximately three minutes, except for the last movement which lasts five minutes. Movement One, entitled Schools of Fish, is a brisk opener that symbolizes the sea as a whole, teeming with life. Movement Two is called Shipwrecks. The music is contemplative and represents the multitude of ships that rest at the bottom of the sea, many of which are the graves of brave sailors. Movement Three is a march called Fighting Crabs, and is about two crabs who fight to the death for food. In Movement Four, The Abyss, the listener descends to the depths, whereupon he/she finds a peaceful rest. The last movement, A Squall, begins calmly, but a foreboding storm in the distance threatens to takes away the calm. The Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, is heard just before the storm strikes. Finally, the calmness returns and the piece ends triumphantly. Scores and parts are included for full orchestra, including piano. Full program notes are available from the composer.

The title refers to Miacomet, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. This work is one of a variety of pieces deeply connected to the landscape of Nantucket. The inspiration for the work was an oil painting, Path to Miacomet (2006), by Loretta Yoder; its fervency of color and landscape provided the poetic image that drives the work. The music itself was worked out during a the early hours of darkness on the actual beach of Miacomet. As the sun set, and darkness covered the landscape, only the passionate sound of the surf remained. The music is fervent and searching in tone. It begins with a roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material-a simple lament-like theme in a folkinflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time it is whispered. The movement winds down to a distant and reposed conclusion. Featuring beautiful melodies that soar over driving, syncopated rhythms, this piece makes for an exciting overture for any Pops, Classics, or Canadian Content programme.From the composer: This Suite is written in three contiguous movements, named for Vancouver, BC’s most iconic features: ‘City’, ‘Sea’, and ‘Mountains’. ‘City’ opens with a flourish of harmonic architecture which morphs into a decidedly cosmopolitan syncopated groove, reflecting the city’s bustling energy. ‘Sea’ features a simple, plaintive melody supported by gently undulating waves of harmony which slowly build to a tempestuous climax and then recede into calmness. ‘Mountains’ begins as a gentle stroll through the North Shore’s idyllic peaks.
