It's a virtuoso piano piece, and the orchestra parts are similarly difficult. With this piece, you get to perform a new orchestral work by Brahms, though he's been dead since the 1800's. And it's done only as a super-fan of Brahms could lovingly do. This version is complete, including all the repeats.

This Scherzo is the 3rd movement of the 1st symphony and employs a humorous and playful opening as the woodwinds and strings play a lot of cat and mouse in their question and answer segments. This all switches to a brief adagio that gets us to the concluding Andante section introduced by a solo horn before the mood is set for pizzicato strings to pace the new direction the adventure takes. A recap utilizes some interesting changes in instrumentation with a clarinet solo that restates the opening theme at the same blistering pace the violas were relentlessly challenged by! The studio engineer that put the CD recording together liked this movement of the first symphony above all the others!

It is called a sinfonietta because, while it has the elements of a full symphony, it is shorter. The entire piece is based on the motif in the first bar of the first movement, and that motif get transformed (hence the subtitle Transformations) in many different ways. It is like how a person changes in various situations and in various stages of their life. The first movement (Allegretto) is in sonata form, the second (Andante Adagio) is in a quasi ABA form, the third (Scherzoish) is a Baroque-like quasi scherzo and trio with a modified scherzo at the end, and the fourth (Theme & Variations) is a theme with 3 variations, but elements of the first 3 movements are repeated at the end. .

This new edition includes the following music: Piano accompaniments to the orchestral excerpts from major works for Tuba. This edition does not include a separate Tuba (the tuba part is in the piano accompaniment part though), however, if the performer needs these parts, they are readily available in the Complete Collection of Low Brass Orchestra Music compiled by Gordon Cherry. Many tuba players (at any level) will play in an orchestra or practice the tuba part of a piece as part of their studies. You will also have the opportunity to listen to reference recordings and study those pieces. In this textbook, I have arranged the tuba part so that it can be played with piano accompaniment. Some pieces are difficult to understand from the orchestral soundtrack alone. I have transcribed the piano part as simply as possible. By doing so, you will be able to clearly understand the relationship between the phrases, accompaniment patterns, harmonies, rhythms, and the relationship between the tuba part and the orchestra. I have included many parts other than the ones to be played in the audition pieces. This is because I want you to practice with a strong image of the musicality and sound feeling used in those pieces. I think you will be able to fully understand the outline of the music. Bruckner: Symphony No. 4-9 - You may only have the opportunity to practice the sections for auditions, such as No. 4 (4th movement) and No. 7 (4th movement). However, by practicing other sections as well, you will be able to study the ideal style, sounds, and harmonies that are appropriate for Bruckner's symphonies. By referring to the piano part, you will be able to understand the harmony very quickly. Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture - If you have a chance to practice with a pianist, try practicing at a slower tempo so that you can visualize the ideal tone and nuance of articulation for bass tuba while feeling the harmonic background of the piano playing. Of course, mp3 files will also help you. Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition - Each section is very unique, so it is best to practice with a clear purpose. In Bydlo, everything is arranged for concert use. So it will be possible to play it in a real concert or orchestral situation. If you play with the accompaniment in mind, your approach to the phrases will surely change. I recommend that you practice all sections of Pictures at an Exhibition with a pianist at a slow tempo. The book led me to a biography by Deborah Solomon, Utopia Parkway, and the germ of a symphonic work for Joseph Cornell was born.Symphony No. 5 ... Utopia Parkway is in five movements.I. The first movement, Allegro marcato, is a musical rendition of Joseph’s daily commute into Manhattan where he frequently visited dime stores, junk shops, used book stores, the New City Public Library, art galleries, movie houses and restaurants like Bickford’s and Schraft’s.The Enchanted Wanderer is a collage work on paper by Joseph Cornell – a tribute to Hedy Lamarr. Hollywood fascinated Cornell. He made several box constructions as tributes to movie stars like Lauren Bacall, Jennifer Jones, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, etc.Avian scherzo. Many of Cornell’s boxes featured cutout pictures of parakeets, parrots and cockatoos. Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery is an especially evocative box of his aviary series. There are four birds in it, amidst other odds and ends. A number is attached to each one. There is a crack in the glass encasement – as if hit by a bullet. Blood splatters from the head of one of the birds. . In between the shooting gallery music, there is a Trio: a requiem for the dead cockatoo.Allegro ... à la Can-can. Cornell attended the ballet fervently. He made many box constructions inspired by ballet dancers: Fanny Cerrito, Marie Taglioni, Tamara Toumanova, Zizi Jeanmaire, Allegra Kent, etc. A Pantry Ballet for Jacques Offenbach is a very funny box with five red plastic lobsters in tutus. I provided a polka as background music. This movement is dedicated to Allegra Kent – a friend and confidante of Cornell.Joseph Cornell was an active member of the Christian Science Church for all of his adult life. He attended services regularly, and taught Sunday-school classes. For a while he even worked as an attendant in a Christian Science Reading Room in Great Neck, NY. In the Christian Science Hymnal I found several hymns written by the founder, Mary Baker Eddy, set to music by a number of different composers. I wrote a new tune to her hymn, Shepherd, show me how to go. The last movement, Apotheosis, is a theme and variations on this tune. The overriding feeling of this work is the beauty of tone and lyricism. It is in an ABA form and works particularly well for Horn in F with a range to high A-flat. Benjamin Coy has beautifully arranged this glorious work of 6 minutes in length for Horn Solo and Orchestra. The Nocturno with Horn Solo arranged by Mr. Coy is also available with Wind Ensemble accompaniment.
