Sounds of Winter is an impressionistic tone-painting depicting the natural beauty of the outdoors in Winter. In writing this piece, I envisioned landscapes covered in snow and ice – a meadow, a dark forest, a frozen lake, and a majestic mountain range. I sought to capture other elements of sound and imagery as well, such as whistling and whirling of frosty wind, glittering sunlight reflected off of shards of ice, snow falling, and joyous sounds of people ice skating. I was largely inspired by an experience I had of standing outside one wintery evening in Colorado – one of my favorite places to be in Winter – captivated by the beauty of all I saw, heard, and felt around me. Since then, I have always experienced a thrill of wonder, beauty, and mystery about the outdoors in Winter.

I feel honored and thankful to have been asked by Greg Hustis and the Music In the Mountains festival in Durango, Colorado to compose a piece honoring local firefighters and first responders following a deadly outbreak of wildfires around that region during the summer of 2018. When I learned about the fires, my heart went out to all the people affected. As the fires closed in from all around, beautiful mountain landscapes were burnt black, homes were threatened, and residents were forced to evacuate; however, the city and peoples’ homes were ultimately kept safe and no one was injured, all because of the fearless efforts of those who laid their lives on the line. My inspiration for the music, as well as the title, came directly from these heroes whose courage and effort proved to shine brighter than the flames. Although this piece was originally commissioned in response to this disaster in 2018, at its heart the piece is a tribute to all the brave heroes out there who fight in countless ways in the midst of disasters every day to keep all of us and our communities safe.

Composer’s Note: Enchanted Landscapes was commissioned by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in recognition of the Association’s 90th Anniversary. Inspired by the theme of America the Beautiful, I decided to portray the actual beauty of the land, rather than to use Katharine Lee Bates and Samuel Ward's famous song as a musical reference. Thus, Enchanted Landscapes was composed as a single-movement Symphonic Poem, which transforms various visual elements of our magical views into an audible experience. The main melody is vast; Spanning over 30 measures, it conveys the feeling of spaciousness. Then, the same long melody repeats in a different, higher key. The middle part of the composition presents a fanfare-like theme, which builds up through both dynamics and polyphonic means. This section, dominated mainly by the brass and wind instruments, brings in a sense of drama, mystery, and purple mountain majesties. Finally, the use of Melodica sound in the otherwise traditional orchestration, adds a feeling of nostalgia and longing to the pure and proud landscape that watches upon us constantly, and connects us with the earth, with nature, and with ourselves. Sounds of Winter is an impressionistic tone-painting depicting the natural beauty of the outdoors in Winter. In writing this piece, I envisioned landscapes covered in snow and ice – a meadow, a dark forest, a frozen lake, and a majestic mountain range. I sought to capture other elements of sound and imagery as well, such as whistling and whirling of frosty wind, glittering sunlight reflected off of shards of ice, snow falling, and joyous sounds of people ice skating. I was largely inspired by an experience I had of standing outside one wintery evening in Colorado – one of my favorite places to be in Winter – captivated by the beauty of all I saw, heard, and felt around me. Since then, I have always experienced a thrill of wonder, beauty, and mystery about the outdoors in Winter.

Peripeteia means an unexpected change of fortune. I wrote this in Aspen, Colorado during the summer of 1977 when Krysztof Penderecki accepted me as a student during the music festival. In a way, this is a tribute to Penderecki and uses some of his landmark techniques as well many of my own. The duration is 10 minutes. This is a manuscript score and sometimes not easy to read, thus the reduced price.
