Following the critical and commercial disappointment of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, director Nicholas Meyer, who also directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, returned to the franchise and set out to tell a more complex and tonally dark story than any previous installment.Thanks in part to the previous movie’s box office performance, the limited budget available for music led Meyer to consider using Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite to score the movie, but the extraordinary cost of licensing that work and adapting it to fit the picture ruled it out as a viable option.
