I choose and arrange many well-known pieces but, unfortunately, can only publish the public domain music. They are mostly grades 1-3. I try to arrange the parts to be meaningful but at the same time maintaining an effective, complete and pleasing sound. I often arrange parts with individuals in mind. The piano part is there for support and filling in. I composed this Fanfare to start a Christmas Concert. There is a refrain and references to: Deck The Halls (Woodwind), Good King Wenceslas (Woodwind), Hark the Herald (Woodwind), 12 Days of Christmas (Woodwind), In The Bleak Mid-Winter (Brass), O Come All Ye Faithful (Woodwind then Brass), Joy To The World (Trombone and Bass.

An Orchestral Fanfare, written for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Perth. 2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 Bb Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 French Horns, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 2 Trombones, 1 Tuba, 4 Percussion (Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbals), Harp, StringsComposer's notes:2022 was a year that sparked inspiration for me. I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. Few hymn tunes are as popular and moving as “Amazing Grace.” This timeless melody known as “New Britain” was adapted in 1835 to include the inspiring words written by John Newton in 1772. This arrangement holds personal significance, as it was written when my father was very ill—it was his favorite song, especially near the end of his life. The piece starts quietly with an introduction that gradually builds with brass fanfares and woodwind flourishes, emulating both the calm and struggles of youth. The somber mood continues as sustained drones support the iconic melody, echoing in the distance and symbolizing the complex journey of finding one’s path in life. A flowing, calm chromatic section represents a joyous period, which then abruptly shifts to a tumultuous descent. This resolves into a quiet and peaceful conclusion, reflecting ultimate resolution and acceptance. This touching piece will engage audiences and will be a welcome addition to any performance. To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral).
