Dear Lord and Father of Mankind is a hymn with words taken from a longer poem, The Brewing of Soma by American Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The adaptation was made by Garrett Horder in his 1884 Congregational Hymns. In the United Kingdom, the hymn is usually sung to the tune Repton by C. Hubert H. Parry. [Wikipedia] This arrangement of the tune REPTON is for a large mixed ensemble, Concert Band or Orchestra but will work well with smaller combinations of instruments and keyboard which are also included in the PDF. It has been arranged to fit the singing of the 5 or sometimes 6 verses of the traditional words. There is also a descant part for Piccolo, Flute, and Trumpet (3rd and 6th verses) included in the PDF as in the recording. There is a key change for verses 5 and 6 (Eb to F). The MP3 was recorded with NotePerformer 3… Grade = 3 Duration = 3:10 mins (6 Verses).

And it's done only as a super-fan of Brahms could lovingly do. This version is complete, including all the repeats.

She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Â Perhaps, if Brahms weren't so overwhelmed by the genius of Beethoven, who came before, he might have made this his first symphony. Â And you get to hear its third movement now. Â As with the tradition of Beethoven, the 3rd movement is a scherzo. Â You can think of it (at least in the beginning, and end), as the waltz of the gargoyles. The inspiration of this music came from fresh greenery in early summer. The title of Pastoral Fantasy is based on the image of pastoral scenery and it consists the theme of the music. The following is the construction of the music.1. Initial pastoral andante2. Introduction of fugue, develop freely3. Recreation of touching pastoral theme4. Â So I set about orchestrating his sonata for piano, opus 5, as a symphony. Â I doing so, I've seen many things in his piano music, that suggest he was thinking orchestrally. Â And this was a composition from his youth (1854). Â Perhaps, if he weren't so overwhelmed by the genius of Beethoven, who came before, he might have made this his first symphony. Â Brahms has long been a staple of concert-going audiences, and with this piece, you can perform a new symphony of Brahms, created from his piano sonata in F-minor, orchestrated into a symphony.

The Mini Concerto For Alex is just one example. Â Markings in the piano music, such as 'like cello', or in another place 'like pizzicato', suggest he was thinking in orchestral terms. Â Indeed, the earliest sketches of his 1st symphony come from the year his sonata in F-minor was published. Â Yet he worked at least 14 years on his first symphony, finally publishing it in 1876, at age 43. Â What if Brahms had orchestrated his sonata in F-minor, opus 5, publishing it as his first symphony, in his youth, rather than at age 43? Â Attempting to answer that, I embarked on a big project, to orchestrate Brahms sonata in F-minor, into a symphony. Â And you can listen to it yourself, as the music of Brahms comes shining through, as a symphony that 'might have been'. Â Though the instrument choices and dynamics adjustments for orchestra are mine, the music is all Brahms. Â See what you think. Â This is the 5th movement, the Finale. It was written down in 1988 when I was 19, but had been with me in my head since I was about 8. Back then I had no idea how to write down full orchestral music, but after all my teenage years spent feeding off the Great Masters and studying their brilliant orchestrations in scores, I finally made an attempt at notating this florid little piece when I was at college (London College of Music) in 1988. Not wishing to waste it, I have now revised it and finally prepared its score and parts for performance.InstrumentationPiccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bflat clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns in F, 2 Bflat Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Bass trombone, Glock, 2 harps, celesta, large string section to accommodate divisi into 3 for all except the basses.Duration – 3 minutes approx.All the parts are fairly straightforward, except the harps and celesta, which I believe to be of some challenge.If it was to find a place in a concert programme, I believe it would be a lovely encore – a really loving way to send your audience home from a great night out. A thank you to the audience. A Good Night To All kind of piece, full of love and delight.
