This concerto is in the traditional three movement format with the first and third movements being fast and the middle movement slow. The second and third movements are most like a blues work. The first movement is a rondo format, is not particularly bluesy. A Les Paul™ guitar would play particularly well in this movement. The second movement switches between the soloist as the distorted guitar sound to the vocalist as the clean guitar sound. The final movement is happy, upbeat, and lively good time blues. In the second and third movements in particular, the basses (cello, double bass) should be easily heard. At the end of the third movement, the precisionist on the drum set should improvise a loud, untimed measure, solo utilizing all the drums and cymbals in the set ending with four moderately paced and slowing beats on the snare drum. A momentary pause, then the final chord. The guitarist will need at least one foot pedal for distortion enabling him/her to switch between a clean sound and a distorted sound. The guitar should be the equivalent of a Fender™ Stratocaster or Telecaster guitar; a Gibson™ Les Paul would do nicely also. The music is partially fingered leaving the player the opportunity to interpret the part. The work is after the fashion of Chicago style blues of the 1960’s. The conductor and guitarist may wish to listen to recordings by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, B.B. King, etc. to get a feel for the music of the 1960’s blues bands. It would be highly desirable to use an organ, for the 3rd movement, that can produce a Hammond B3™ with Leslie sound, as that instrument was widely used in blues of that period. Although some of the notes notated as harmonics (h) in the score can be played as fretted notes, playing them as natural and artificial harmonics provides an interesting change of tonality. The orchestral part is not particularly challenging. The concerto is approx. 17 minutes in length.

The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview.

A quite demanding concerto from a technical point of view, unfolds many sonorities for both solo instruments as well as orchestra, including dense texture, polyphony, and a flavor of minimalism just before the end. After an agitated orchestra introduction, the flute enters with a lamenting and painful melody. The guitar takes over by introducing the core motivic elements of the work. Flute and guitar join in a chase-like duet with virtuosic passages in both instruments, accompanied by the orchestra in a frenzied commotion. The slow and almost distorted cadenza (with the snare drum) comes as a surprise and at the same time as a moment of relief. The tension increases as propulsive rhythms drive through the finale and build with rapid agitation to the end. The title of the work, Constitution Article 91, refers to a part of the former Greek constitution used by the dictatorship between 1967 and 1974 to abolish democracy in Greece. Certain rhythms in the work come from a fearsome and agitated speech that the dictator delivered to the academicians in 1973 following the students movement against the tyranny. Constitution Article 91 is a real tour de force for the soloists. In this colorful work, Apostolos Paraskevas shows us that a meeting point can be found between advanced contemporary idioms and evocations of an almost popular style. This music is notable for its rhythmic verve, its melodic grace, and its emotional depth. It has genuine substance, but speaks directly to the listener-a rare and welcome achievement. Merry Christmas, Darling is a Christmas song by the Carpenters (music by Richard Carpenter, lyrics by Frank Pooler), and originally recorded in 1970. It received a number of remixes, most notably in 1978 in a newly recorded vocal version by Karen Carpenter, which was done at her request. Richard Carpenter himself called the original recording one of his sister's very best. Hearing this song today with knowing ears and the knowledge of Karen Carepenter's mental health problems it makes a beautiful, sentimental song all the more bitter sweet and precious. It is a perfect little gem.In this orchestration - in the original Karen Carpenter key - there is never any heavy brass apart from 4 horns used very sparingly, and the optional original alto saxophone solo is also cued (as an alternative) for a Trumpet or Flugel horn if a sax is not available.
