Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Fat Fred and Sleazy Louise Got together one day; Fat Fred was easy to please, And she was going his way.... This is a reworking of a fun piece I originaally wrote over 30 years ago, and I have to admit that after all this time I can't actually remember why I gave it the title Sleazy Louise. But in the slow, smoochy middle section (not included in the sample recording) you'll hear that there is something a bit disreputable, down-at-heel and nicotine-stained about this lady. Scored for full orchestra, including alto and tenor saxophones, there are optional additional parts for baritone saxophone, Eb horn, treble clef trombone in Bb, easy violin and descant recorder. The violin cues in the clarinet part should only be played if the violins need reinforcing. Sleazy Louise has been performed in several countries, notably when some orchestral players fitted silly words to it and sang it to startled onlookers in Red Square, Moscow!

Programme Notes: It is said that the darkest hour of the night comes just before the dawn. – Thomas Fuller Mornings are powerful and evocative moments. The chorus of birds, one species after another, unite in a wild and genuine polyphony while the dew and mist evaporate upon the rising of the sun, encouraging goosebumps and shivers from an open window, tempered or exhilarated by a cup of coffee. Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or Dawn Song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. Written in 2007 for the Luton Symphony Orchestra in Bedfordshire, England, the Anasazi Overture is a fun and crowd-pleasing concert overture that combines beautiful Coplandesque string playing with exciting Hans Zimmer style brass. The piece is based on two Native American folk tunes; A Hopi lullaby and a Pueblo corn grinding song. The instrumentation of the piece is without percussion as the original intent of the work was to Make it cheap to play. It features double winds and brass with the exception of a 3rd horn part. The level of playing for the strings is quite advanced and the piece is suitable for all-county, all-state, youth orchestras, semiprofessional and professional groups.Some of the advanced techniques required involve heavy double-stopping and high shifting positions for the strings and Hans Zimmer style cuivre for the horns (NOTE: NOT STOPPED HORN) as well as upward rips.The included MP3 recording is the first live performance of the work by the amateur group it was composed for, but I am confident that this piece will prove to be fun and exciting to play for even professional orchestras. This set contains 1 of each part. Permission is given to create copies of the parts for each player in the orchestra as needed. The work has been quite popular with those who have played it. The composition is dedicated to the memory of my aunt LIÃ?NARD, in memory of Nazelles. My orchestral transcription of this piece is for a full orchestra. In such a new quality, this music can live well on the symphonic stage, adorning many programs with its originality. But first of all, I would like to draw the attention of the choreographers to this basically danceable, diverse and brightly characteristic music. Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. The title of this work is a metaphor and it shouldn't be taken literally as a concerto for any specific instrument, although brass and metal percussion instruments are prominent. Ever since I can remember, Rhythm & Blues and Rock & Roll have had a strong influence in me musically. In like manner Concierto de Metal para un Recuerdo utilizes a popular and common 4-part street corner harmonic progression as it's main recourse. The sonic material or theme that evolves from that is transformed and modified into various melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and/or timbre motifs. A surprise feel good rock passage emerges revealing another cultural phenomena that permeates in our socio-musical environment. This work questions the possibility of overcoming abstruse musical concepts in contemporary concert music. But at the same time, it is revolutionary in the sense that it dares to contradict and confront Eurocentric musical concepts with an accessible and unpretentious street gutted idiom.

At the centre of the Norfolk city of Norwich lies Tombland. The name evokes thoughts of haunting, death and Black Plague burial pits. Actually Tombland simply means empty space and it was here that Norwich market was sited. Violence seems to have been a recurring theme in the history of Tombland. In 1549 Robert Kett led a rebellion against the enclosure of common land. After a fierce attack on Bishop Bridge, Kett and his band of followers gained access to the city and took the Mayor, Thomas Codd, prisoner. Having spent a number of years as a clergyman in the Diocese of Norwich, I can tell you that this area is very different nowadays. However, its Normal cathedral and older buildings still offer a sense of struggles past, present and future. Inspired by Ray Sampson’s book, Tombland, this original work for full orchestra uses harmonic and rhythmic dissonance to portray the violent and oppressive struggle between those with and ‘those without. The blacksmith’s anvil heralds village life with church bells sounding and flute introducing children playing in the village square. Very quickly the scene changes as Basses offer a deep threatening tone and slowly the rhythmic confusion builds to an eventual climax. Horns then introduce a quasi carillon Dies Irae theme and flutes and piccolo enter with a haunting bird call until low strings and Cor Anglais begin the build up to chaos once again. The work’s false, dying ending suddenly gives way to a sacred style chorale leading to the very abrupt Malcolm Arnold style ending.

From the formal point of view, Un Piccolo Concerto is structured in three movements: I: Moderato, II: Homage to Ponce, mostly slow and II: Aires Mexicanos, allegro with verve. From the harmonic point of view, in the first movement a modal language is used, with some very tonal parts, the use of pantonalism or a very accelerated path through different tones and some use of blue elements, with a leitmotiv that is will repeat several times, giving the work a minimalist accent. The second movement, however, is very tonal, epic, with different changes of tone and mode in its development. In the third, the procedure is totally tonal, although very modulant, where they try to reflect the Mexican airs, because that is its main purpose. In this movement the same leitmotiv of the first one is also exploited, but with the rhythmic variant that supposes the ternary subdivision (6/8). In all movements, special care has been taken to respect the guitar aspect, both in technique and style. The estimated duration is approximately 17:30, although it could vary according to the sense given to the rittardando, taste of the interpreter and intermediates between movements.

I'd long wanted to compose an opera based on Arthur Miller's masterpiece based around the Salem witchcraft trials in the American colonies in 1692. Knowing that this was unlikely to come to fruition, nevertheless I sketched out some ideas just in case, which I turned into a 3 movement work for a local orchestra in 1999 for performance at their concert in September 2000. During January - March 2020 I revised the work for a larger orchestra adding 2 more movements (nos 3 & 4) and revising the existing movements. The opening movement is intended to be the Prelude to the opera. The 2nd movement the Prelude to the tense 3rd Act. The 3rd movement takes place at the climactic moment of Act 3, when John Proctor's valiant and desperate attempt to expose Abigail Williams' for what she is backfires, leading to his arrest. The 4th movement opens with the Hymn/Psalm associated with the people of Salem and continues with the reconciliation in prison between John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.The 5th and final movement accompanies John Proctor's march to execution having nobly torn up his confession of witchcraft. The Hymn/Psalm returns before reminiscences of the opening Prelude return ending the work in a sense of uneasy peace. Parts can be made available upon request.

A fun and light-hearted piece. Why the hummingbird? Those cute, little, delicate creatures that just want to go about their business admiring the flowers. After living in Costa Rica for some time it couldn’t be farther from the truth, they are aggressive birds that pick a fight with anything that comes into their territory. But let’s talk about this concerto. It first began with the composer’s desire to write a concerto for flute. Influenced by the 3/8 rhythm of the piano sonatas of Alessandro Scarlatti. Hence, the first movement was born with its sort of here, there, and here again quality which reminded me of the many hummingbirds that I’ve seen in Costa Rica. The first movement also contains a quality of jazz to it and is a nice addition to the flute concerto repertoire. The second movement is slow and straight forward. It is relax time that only a flute can evoke. The third is a sort of Mozart styled third Rondo movement. But as you will listen there are some elements that have nothing to do with Mozart. The harmonies are modern as well as some of the rhythmic aspects.Â

Fourth Symphony in E flat major Homage to Beethoven (2003, revised 2021), a Neo-Classical symphony based on Beethoven's sketches for his Tenth Symphony, like a speculative reconstruction. In 1822-1827, the fascinating Tenth Symphony (Biamonti 838) was one of Beethoven’s relatively advanced projects, but still it was at the beginning of its elaboration. The material is not quite abundant, and many secondary features in the concept sketches could have been modified, according to his working habits, should he have lived a few years more. For a true reconstruction, the sketches are too scarce, but they are also too good to be left aside and very stimulating for a composer, especially for one whose formation is indebted to Beethoven and who is willing to pay him homage. I have chosen a Neo-Classical idiom, an approach analogous to Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss (after Tchaikovsky). For such a work, the thorough study of fundamental articles on Beethoven’s projects and sketches (by Barry Cooper, Sieghard Brandenburg, Robert Winter, Martin Staehelin, Nicholas Cook, and Lewis Lockwood) was a necessity. Then, in 2021, the symphony was heavily revised, mainly to make it terser and truer to the sketches and to Classical practices For this symphony, all the thematic material is Beethoven’s, and also the general outline, as much as the latter could be inferred from his sketches. In its revised version, I made use only of the sketches clearly identifiable as intended for the Tenth Symphony and dating from 1822 and later years (most of the themes of its corresponding movements), but also of a few other sketches, most of them contemporary or relatable, unused or intended for other compositions: in the continuation to the second subject group in the first movement, in the second strains of the Presto and of its Trio, and in the transitions and the episodes in the Finale. The symphony has 4 movements and is scored for a normal concert orchestra, including 3 trombones. The revised version makes use also of a contrabassoon, to support the double basses and suggesting a stronger presence of the winds like in the larger scale concerts in the Classical era (usually with doubled winds).Total duration: 34 min. I started writing what would become One Sows for the Benefit of Another Age in 2013, as I was sketching ideas for what became a piano trio. I liked what I had created, but two things became evident: The piece was destined to be for orchestra, and I was not good enough as a composer to finish it. Over the next seven years, I kept returning to this piece in my spare time, adding some sections, tweaking some others, and at some point I gained the experience to finish it. But the trade-off was that I no longer had the time. At least until Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic put most of my projects on hold, and I was able to return to--and finish--the work.The title came last. My ideas while I was writing centered around Americana (I was listening to a lot of Copland, Barber, and Ives) and infusing my history and experience in the Ozarks and on the plains. I knew I wanted to make use of the idea of illumination, of dawn. I wanted to start in the shadows and end aglow. The darkness was such a defining feature that my working title was Aegri Somnia, loosely translated from Latin as troubled dreams. As I continued working, I realized that the focus wasn't the darkness--the focus was the change.I discuss change a lot in my teaching. Students often see change as transformative change--massive, radical, sweeping change, like winning the lottery, or winning an audition. Transformative change is easy--it usually involves hoping for a situation or a Deus ex Machina, and if it happens, it benefits us immediately. Iterative change, however--small, repeated, incremental change that builds up over time--is hard. An extra half-hour of work every day, a little extra contributed to savings every month, these changes add up over time and become significant. But it requires intention and action, and it doesn't reap immediate benefits. It may not end up benefitting us at all.One Sows changes iteratively. It starts from a dark place, but is sprinkled with seeds of hope. A descending motive introduced in the violins brings us out of the darkness, albeit slowly. The idea spreads, develops, and eventually becomes part of a new idea, a new paradigm, that takes over.In searching for a title, I came across Serit ut alteri saeclo prosit, North Dakota's Latin state motto, whose English translation is the title of this work. It's a recent addition to the North Dakota statutes, but a timeless message. Our work isn't finished yet.

I choose and arrange many well-known pieces but, unfortunately, can only publish the public domain music. They are mostly grades 1-3. I try to arrange the parts to be meaningful but at the same time maintaining an effective, complete and pleasing sound. I often arrange parts with individuals in mind. The piano part is there for support and filling in. I composed this Fanfare to start a school concert.

Concerto for Soprano Saxophone was commissioned and premiered by Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson in 1998 with the Northern Arizona University Orchestra, Robert Baldwin conducting. I knew of Paulsson’s expertise and artistry as I had composed my cantata Feet of Jesus with his playing in mind. The first movement contains thematic material that is repeated and developed in the second and third movements. I wanted to take advantage of the melodic potential of the soprano sax, exploring nuances of color throughout the range. There are slight suggestions of jazz elements. This first movement introduces the sound of the soprano saxophone and suggests what is to come later on with more challenging technical passages.

This piece is for a symphony that would play more challenging music. It is how I view, and harmonize, my dysfuctional/abusive family. The middle section falls apart much like my family truly was, behind closed doors. That is: we lived in the same house, but we did not communicate, we did not listen to each other. Near the end, it becomes much darker, almost funereal, like the truth of what being the youngest child (of a narcissistice mother, with an older narcissistic sister, a dad who chooses to remain ignorant) in my family was truly like. The various parts represent members of my family , sometimes several parts represent one member, or (at times) one part represents several members. Typically, the flute represents my sister, clarinet represents myself (sometimes tuba and trumpet as well). The parts overlap , to show how we did not listen and spoke at each other rather than with each other. This piece shows not just what each person was like on the outside, but also shows the more subtle sides of each member that few people really see or know about (the abuse behind closed doors). This piece is multi faceted, multi layered, like the 4 main members of my family are. The very end points to the Grace of God being the only thing that can heal my family at this point. The flute ends higher than clarinet, in the Hope that Healing can truly occur (not just my family, but with other families that hurt as well).

Exeter City March was composed for the professional Football (soccer) Club in Exeter, UK, for performance over the public address system by the 100-strong Exeter Children's Orchestra. It includes parts for hooligans in the percussion section playing rattles and whistles (these don't sound in the MP3). There was an online competition for the club's fans to choose a title; they chose March of the Grecians (the club's nickname) but as the brief introduction uses the beginning of Rule Britannia I think listeners might be mystified by the Greek allusion, so I prefer my original title! In June 2011 Exeter City March was broadcast on the UK national music radio station, BBC Radio 3, as part of its festival of light music Light Fantastic. There are separate printed parts for all the standard orchestral instruments, including alto and tenor saxophone and descant recorder (not necessary) and there are also optional parts for violin replacing viola, trombone in treble clef, baritone saxophone and horn in E flat.
