Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1374158). This 4-part suite is called Serenade in A. This name, chosen by its author, completely exhausts the content of this music and emphasizes the main idea of the composition, as well as the tonality of all parts. Each part provides comprehensive details in this series and has its own title. I emphasize that this is by no means a programmatic essay. The nature of each part and their internal content pushed me to follow my interpretation of each part in the orchestral transcription. 1. Hymne is essentially nothing more than a Hymn of love! His character, sublime above the everyday, is, as it were, raised to the surface and presented in bright, broad strokes as an irrefutable truth. 2. Romanza - I perceive it as a kind of parody of a love romance with the main sentiments and elements inherent in this genre. This is by no means a refutation of love, but only some irony over the false, pretentious way of expressing this feeling. The grotesque character is emphasized whenever possible by the orchestration. 3. Rondoletto - this part, from the very beginning in my orchestration, resembles the multi-voiced play of musicians preparing to play, testing the sound of their instruments, tuning them and playing out. 4. Cadenza Finala - the nature of the music is the union and rapture of love. In my orchestration there can be traced duets of various instruments and orchestra groups such as: a pair of Flutes, a pair of Oboes, Clarinets, Trumpets, Trombones, 1st and 2nd Violins. This feature of the pairs I have chosen should emphasize their relationship and relatedness.

It contains whirling broken chords at Prestissimo speed; a frenzied but controlled perpetual motion etude. The piece is a giant chord progression with each whirling chord lasting 8 bars. Grim (A0.939372). This piece is inspired by Terry Riley's In C. Repetitions is a solo for found objects and The Repeater Orchestra, a free program online that mimics live sounds in real time, and plays them back in a stereo/spacial environment. It has non-standard notation in a way, with single bits written on a staff arranged in an order to play them. The player is given freedom to repeat things as many times as they want, making the piece possible to play in under 2 minutes, to well into the dozens. In my interpretation (shown in the YouTube video), it takes around 11 minutes. This piece is about making a soundscape of repeated patterns, and overlapping and combining them to create one conglomerate. Instruments include: planks of wood, a bucket of water, ceramic tiles, a glass bottle with marbles in it, a can, and a separate glass bottle for hitting. Implements include: a 2 paintbrush, a ring, rubber xylophone mallets, and oak dowel rods with Moleskin wrapped on one tip. Note, I apologize for the feedback near the first third of the recording, I had to adjust the settings, and did not hear the feedback as hard as the computer did!

Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes. The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast. A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used. The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement. The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots. The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques. The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized. The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord. In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch. In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board. The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent. The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation. In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger. The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption. The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest. It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes. I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. May it, and this new year, spark inspiration for you.

The poem is timed somewhat to the music, however, each reader will offer their own interpretation and cadence to fit within the overall fabric of the music. The score is particularly suited for professional orchestras especially since it calls for two harpists and a full compliment of strings, winds, and brass, and a variety of interesting percussion. The original melody was written by Wayne in 1969 as a jingle for a Lego commercial. Vigrass and Osborne, the performers of the original jingle, added lyrics to the song and recorded it for inclusion on their 1972 album Queues. Their interpretation was also released as a single and gained moderate commercial success in Japan, selling more than 100,000 copies and becoming a top-20 hit on the country's record chart. The best-known version is the recording by Justin Hayward from the album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. Wayne wanted to include a love song on the album that sounded like Forever Autumn, and he decided that the best course of action was to simply use the original song. Wayne chose Hayward, of The Moody Blues, to sing it saying that he wanted that voice from 'Nights in White Satin'.It was recorded at London's Advision Studios in 1976. The song reached #5 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1978. A new version was released in late 2012, sung by Gary Barlow for the new album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds – The New Generation.

Proctor (A0.809889). This concerto is in the traditional three movement format with the first and third movements being fast and the middle movement slow. The second and third movements are most like a blues work. The first movement is a rondo format, is not particularly bluesy. A Les Paul™ guitar would play particularly well in this movement. The second movement switches between the soloist as the distorted guitar sound to the vocalist as the clean guitar sound. The final movement is happy, upbeat, and lively good time blues. In the second and third movements in particular, the basses (cello, double bass) should be easily heard. At the end of the third movement, the precisionist on the drum set should improvise a loud, untimed measure, solo utilizing all the drums and cymbals in the set ending with four moderately paced and slowing beats on the snare drum. A momentary pause, then the final chord. The guitarist will need at least one foot pedal for distortion enabling him/her to switch between a clean sound and a distorted sound. The guitar should be the equivalent of a Fender™ Stratocaster or Telecaster guitar; a Gibson™ Les Paul would do nicely also. The music is partially fingered leaving the player the opportunity to interpret the part. The work is after the fashion of Chicago style blues of the 1960’s. The conductor and guitarist may wish to listen to recordings by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, B.B. King, etc. to get a feel for the music of the 1960’s blues bands. It would be highly desirable to use an organ, for the 3rd movement, that can produce a Hammond B3™ with Leslie sound, as that instrument was widely used in blues of that period. Although some of the notes notated as harmonics (h) in the score can be played as fretted notes, playing them as natural and artificial harmonics provides an interesting change of tonality. The orchestral part is not particularly challenging. The concerto is approx. 17 minutes in length.

CONJUNCTION interprets the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn near the end of the year 2020 as a celestial metaphor for the good news of Christ's birth in a replay of the Star of Bethlehem. Hence, its subtitle of The Christmas Star of 2020. The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times.It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars.For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme.
