About Contagion, the music From quarantine life, something painful this way comes, a new, pandemic inspired, life soundtrack… Contagion is a moment, an interruption, signifying an expression of feelings and music that the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and quarantine brought to light. It’s a contemporary classical life-track, serving as a soundtrack to the contagion, to its spread, to its mystery, its attack on the body, to our losses during the Covid-19 pandemic and to our future beyond them. As the virus flooded every news outlet, Contagion became an interruption, a mysterious invader, taking over everything, needing to be expressed. It’s a “lifetrack†or “life soundtrack†with its contemporary classical orchestral sounds expressing the feelings and experiences of those first few months of dread and quarantine, through which many of us felt the fear of it all and the actual loss of loved ones. The past year has been filled with collective grief throughout the entire world. In some way or another, the global pandemic of 2020-21 has affected each one of us in our own way. In this piece, I illustrate the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The entire piece is harmonically based on two pitches, E and G-sharp. In the denial and anger stage of this work, this is characterized by a C augmented chord. Once the music finally makes sense of this loss, each of the instruments begin to play off each other; as part of the bargaining. About two-thirds of the way into the entire composition, the piece dramatically slows down and the E and G-sharp chord returns, only this time with C-sharp to represent a minor chord. The texture is heavy to represent depression. At measure 201, the flute enters with a melody that gradually grows, symbolic of accepting the loss as the texture increases. The final phrase of this piece ends with the true acceptance of this loss, but the grief has not completely dissipated. It shrinks, but still remains. The opening section’s E and G# are retained in the final chord of the composition to show that grief remains. But they are now part of an E major triad, suggesting acceptance and moving forward.

Based off the texts of Joseph Campbell, this is a musical representation of the hero’s journey with a twist: The hero becomes fully aware of the cycle they are both blessed and cursed to follow. With every step, the hero fights the tropes of mythology, but can they escape their own fate?Movement I: The Calling introduces our main theme naively. It's done in a style reflective of all action/adventure genres: romantically boastful, one dimensional and confident. But as the call to adventure imposes itself on the hero, the hero begins to think that all is not what it seems to be.Movement II: The Motions is a set of trials where the hero experiences great loss, triumphant battles, and a renewed image. Yet, that is just the cycle they expected and its trite conclusion and three act distinction troubles the hero.Movement III: A Fool’s Reckoning is a response to being a pawn in someone else’s story. It takes all learned elements and tries to distort them to be something new and different. But what if this transformation was all part of the same cycle? The hero fights until they forget what they fight for. Reluctantly resilient, they carry on wondering if there was ever anything heroic about them at all.

During Malaysia's third Covid-19 Lockdown, in January 2021, I composed a short piece for solo trombone each day for 14 days, performing them each evening in an online stream from my apartment balcony. This work fleshes out the themes from Lockdown Miniatures #1 and #4. The first two themes, from Lockdown Miniatures #1 (subtitled Here We Go Again), reflect the angst and uncertainty of beginning yet another lockdown — with all businesses once again closed, police roadblocks preventing movement beyond the neighborhood, and all human contact reduced to a small screen. The third theme, from Lockdown Miniatures #4 (subtitled Loss), is meant to express the raw emotion associated with losing loved ones over the previous ten months. This piece was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miran Vaupotic, on 26 February 2022 as part of a project by Parma Recordings. The album, titled Sparks: Eye of London, was released in October 2022 on Navona Records.

Published by Robin Butler (A0.1335304). Adagio A Silent Tear is a somber piece I wrote to capture the emotions and struggle felt through the loss of those closest to us. The use of sentimental melodies accompanied with emerging harmonies was inspired by music of the early 20th century, with orchestration inspired by a variety of composers from Tchaikovsky to Samuel Barber. I wrote the piece in ternary form to tell a sort of story, one of tears, struggle, and sorrow. However, at the end, struggle falls away as hope breaks through, imagined in the piece through the final climax.It was premired by the UMSL Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2018.

Throughout the work, the trombone is placed into a variety of different musical contexts—sometimes with bleakness and sometimes with warmth. The work begins with the tubular bells alone, presenting the principal musical material of the work. The strings enter with a suspended tapestry, through which the trombone plays its opening melodies. In this section, the trombone has a cantorial role—singing and interacting with the orchestra. These opening musical ideas are developed as the trumpet, horn, and clarinet join the trombone in soloistic roles. A signal gesture on the trumpet is heard once, interrupting the tapestry. When the signal is heard again, the music accelerates into the second section. The second section is fast and bell-like as the trombone sings excited lines through ringing masses of sound. Whirring figurations emerge in the winds and are picked up by the strings. The sectiongrows wilder until it climaxes in hammer chords. From this, the trumpet, bells, and trombone emerge—maintaining and propelling the energy of thesection. Gradually, the energy is released, leading into the third section. The third section is chorale-like, combining again suspended sounds in the strings with harmonic motion in the winds in brass. The trombone again plays a cantorial role. A build up of energy occurs at the end of this section, leading into the fourth and final section—the cadenza. The trombone bursts into the cadenza, not with a forceful shout, but with a whisper. The work winds down to its conclusion—without a loss of speed or energy, but rather by the increase of silence.
