I adapted this movement of Bizet's only symphony for my high school orchestra so that they would have the experience and challenge of performing a major symphonic work written by Bizet when he was 17 years old-like many of them. The movement fit programing concerns (only lasting 12 minutes, 8 minutes without the repeat) and instrumentation demands for the orchestra I had at the school at that time. I found limited similar repertoire available that was appropriate to challenge my students. I was also personally motivated to dig deeper into this piece by adapting it, much like early composers learned by serving as copyists for previous musical legends. More recently, I performed this as a guest conductor with a senior level honors orchestra in Massachussetts. In both cases the work was the focus of musical stimulation as well as inspiring fully engaged student conversation about many aspects of this movement. In short, the students enjoyed preparing and performing the piece, almost as much as the audiences were impressed by the performances. Hopefully Bizet's teacher at the Paris Conservatiore, Charles Gounod, rewarded Bizet with a good grade! I put in the extra time to publish this so that many other students would have the opportunity to study this piece, composer, style and period of music. This piece is inspired by Terry Riley's In C. Repetitions is a solo for found objects and The Repeater Orchestra, a free program online that mimics live sounds in real time, and plays them back in a stereo/spacial environment. It has non-standard notation in a way, with single bits written on a staff arranged in an order to play them. The player is given freedom to repeat things as many times as they want, making the piece possible to play in under 2 minutes, to well into the dozens. In my interpretation (shown in the YouTube video), it takes around 11 minutes. This piece is about making a soundscape of repeated patterns, and overlapping and combining them to create one conglomerate. Instruments include: planks of wood, a bucket of water, ceramic tiles, a glass bottle with marbles in it, a can, and a separate glass bottle for hitting. Implements include: a 2 paintbrush, a ring, rubber xylophone mallets, and oak dowel rods with Moleskin wrapped on one tip. Note, I apologize for the feedback near the first third of the recording, I had to adjust the settings, and did not hear the feedback as hard as the computer did!

Scenes from the Sea is a suite in five movements for full orchestra, each of which lasts approximately three minutes, except for the last movement which lasts five minutes. Movement One, entitled Schools of Fish, is a brisk opener that symbolizes the sea as a whole, teeming with life. Movement Two is called Shipwrecks. The music is contemplative and represents the multitude of ships that rest at the bottom of the sea, many of which are the graves of brave sailors. Movement Three is a march called Fighting Crabs, and is about two crabs who fight to the death for food. In Movement Four, The Abyss, the listener descends to the depths, whereupon he/she finds a peaceful rest. The last movement, A Squall, begins calmly, but a foreboding storm in the distance threatens to takes away the calm. The Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, is heard just before the storm strikes. Finally, the calmness returns and the piece ends triumphantly. Third of a set of musical tellings of sayings and proverbs from around the world. Good for a children's concert. This very short piece opens by depicting the open savanna and the roar of Lion. A fanfare welcomes him, then we hear his confident march and another roar. However, he is plagued by many fleas, who perform a jazz waltz between bites and jumps. At the end, helpless Lion staggers away, cheeky fleas still biting. First performance was by York Guildhall Orchestra under Simon Wright. The children in the audience could be invited to state the moral of this Kenyan saying: A flea can trouble a lion more than the lion can harm a flea. The movement uses flute doubling on referee's whistle, piccolo, 2 oboes (one doubling on swanee whistle), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, untuned percussion, harp and strings. Duration: 2minutes.

This movement, true to Schubert’s symphonic style, carries a lively yet graceful energy, interspersed with contrasting themes that reflect both joy and contemplation.The fourth movement begins with a nod to Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, seamlessly transitioning from the grandeur of the third movement. Drawing from the overture’s distinctive opening, I introduce a bold and majestic theme that acts as a foundation for the final movement. From here, the symphony unfolds into a dramatic and richly textured conclusion. My aim in this movement was to capture Schubert’s gift for lyrical, expansive melody while incorporating the dynamic tension and rhythmic drive that characterizes his symphonic writing.Throughout the fourth movement, I intertwine moments of serene beauty with powerful orchestral climaxes, echoing the drama of the symphony’s first movement. The use of Schubert’s melodic genius is central to this completion, with soaring strings and resonant winds building to a thrilling finale. The symphony concludes with a recapitulation of the opening theme from the first movement, bringing a sense of unity and closure to the entire work.The entire symphony, now lasting 50 minutes, forms a cohesive continuation of Schubert's original vision. When composer Jerry Goldsmith was asked to write the score for MacArthur, people were surprised that he accepted the project because they wondered what he would have left to say, musically, after Patton. Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. Braveheart – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the instrumental soundtrack album to the 1995 film of the same name composed and conducted by James Horner and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It is Horner's second of three collaborations with Mel Gibson as director following The Man Without a Face (1993). The soundtrack, comprising 77 minutes of film score, was notably successful and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 68th Academy Awards in 1996, but lost to Luis Bacalov's composition to Il Postino.Horner's score includes a melody that appeared again in his 1997 music for Titanic. Irish band Clannadwrote a theme tune for the film, entitled 'Croí Cróga' (meaning 'braveheart'). However, the track was not used in the soundtrack, but was released by Clannad on the album 'Lore'. Several critics have noted similarities between the Main Theme and an earlier theme song, Kaoru Wada's Pai Longing in the 1991 anime series 3×3 Eyes.[2][3][4].
