Kennedy (November of 1963). As author William Manchester later wrote, “The 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob†that the whole world heard, and that remains part of our national heritage.The background arrangement (optionally with chorus) heightens the emotion of the story until both give way to a regulation trumpet solo version that includes the grace note error and fades at the end. This prelude was included as number 5 in his Opus 23, a set of ten preludes for solo piano. Rachmaninoff himself premiered this prelude in Moscow in 1903, along with Preludes 1 and 2 from this set. It begins with quiet yet decisive sixteenth note figures setting the mood for a minor march. Following this, the relative major Eb comes in full force expanding this sixteenth note figure with a descant-like melody. After a return to g minor, the energy of the opening march dissipates as a new lyrical melody takes the forefront, accompanied by sweeping arpeggios. This section is much melancholier than before. As this theme fades, the march returns slowly out of the mist that the previous section created. It builds to the return of the Eb major section that leads into a continuation of the march theme. This fades into a quick rising figure to finish the prelude. This arrangement captures both the energy of the march and the beauty of the lyrical middle section. Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes. The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast. A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used. The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement. The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots. The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques. The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized. The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord. In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch. In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board. The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent. The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation. In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger. The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption. The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest. It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes. The movements are in 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4 time respectively. Duration is approx. 13:18.

CONJUNCTION interprets the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn near the end of the year 2020 as a celestial metaphor for the good news of Christ's birth in a replay of the Star of Bethlehem. Hence, its subtitle of The Christmas Star of 2020. The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times.It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars.For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme. This piece is for orchestra but grouped as 4 quintets plus strings. This piece started as an elegy for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I decided to use the notes D, Bb and G as a mini motif to represent her initials. The fact that she spent 13 years (a prime number) on the appeals court and 27 years (3 cubed) on the Supreme Court induced me to extend the motif to a 5, 7 and 11 note set of pitches. These (and their inversions) became the basis for the work's melodies.

The piece has been transposed from the original keys to easier keys. Winds that have more than 4 sharps in their respective key signature have courtesy accidentals in their parts. There is an alternate half note in some of the parts that can be played instead of the runs to lessen difficulty. Trumpet 1 can go up to a B, but there are optional lower notes if needed.

Previous versions of this work by other publishers are traditionally littered with mistakes and wrong notes / instructions, which have been fixed in this edition, including the addition of rehearsal marks which correspond across the piano vocal and conductor scores and orchestra parts. Elgar's 1899 work is a song cycle consisting of five songs: Sea Slumber Song, In Haven (Capri), Sabbath Morning at Sea, Where Corals Lie and The Swimmer. It has become one of the most popular works for singers and is frequently a major study work at conservatoires and universities. In the piano vocal score (available elsewhere on this website), the piano part has been adjusted to more closely resemble the orchestral parts. Please note, this version features the original higher keys which Elgar wrote initially for soprano. Sea Pictures is traditionally performed in lower keys, suitable for mezzo-soprano / contralto, as Elgar adjusted them for contralto Dame Clara Butt for the premiere and we also publish this score elsewhere on this site. Movement subtitles are: The Bass Things, which, as the title implies, emphasizes the low instruments. Tempo is quarter note = 72. The second movement's subtitle, Nocturne is a slow movement, half note = 32, mysterious and moody. The third movement, The Color of Sound, explores a variety of chords / dissonances / etc. In 12/8 with the dotted quarter = 84. The forth movement is up tempo at quarter note = 120.
