Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1049004). Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. The attached mp3 was performed by the German saxophonist Jurgen Demmler with pianist Peter Grabinger in 1996. Duration: 20’.

The famous theme from the Largo of the Symphony No. 9 was adapted into the spiritual-like song Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvořák's pupil William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. This arrangement is based on Dvořák's original orchestration of the Largo as well as the cuts and changes made by Fisher for his piano edition. This orchestration is perfectly compatible with Fisher's piano score, which the singer may use. The instrumentation is 2.2(II=corA.).2.2 - 3.2.3.1 - timp - strings + solo singer (preferably baritone) In the UK, the theme gained traction among the general public after its use in an advert for the Hovis bakery. In 1981, Don Williams would record a different song written to the melody, by Roger Cook. The resulting composition, Miracles, would peak at number 4 on the Billboard country singles chart that July, and also reach number 32 on the adult contemporary chart.

Though it has some life and energy to it, there are no tricky rhythms in this arrangement. This should be a pretty easy arrangement to pull together with limited rehearsal time that sounds GREAT! This arrangement begins in the Key of Eb and changes keys to F. You don’t have to have a rhythm section to play this piece. It’s great if you do, but it’s not critical. As long as you have a piano player, they can play the written out piano part and you are good to go. Players can stand up to perform even more lively :)We put BALCANOMANIA on the stage with students of a music school, and it was a hit instantly. Nothing for beginners, though. Now we decided to no longer keep the music in the shelf :) Enjoy it. You not just buy the music but also the right to perform it as often as you wish (but please don't copy for other orchestras...)
