I feel honored and thankful to have been asked by Greg Hustis and the Music In the Mountains festival in Durango, Colorado to compose a piece honoring local firefighters and first responders following a deadly outbreak of wildfires around that region during the summer of 2018. When I learned about the fires, my heart went out to all the people affected. As the fires closed in from all around, beautiful mountain landscapes were burnt black, homes were threatened, and residents were forced to evacuate; however, the city and peoples’ homes were ultimately kept safe and no one was injured, all because of the fearless efforts of those who laid their lives on the line. My inspiration for the music, as well as the title, came directly from these heroes whose courage and effort proved to shine brighter than the flames. Although this piece was originally commissioned in response to this disaster in 2018, at its heart the piece is a tribute to all the brave heroes out there who fight in countless ways in the midst of disasters every day to keep all of us and our communities safe.

No fixed tonal centre2. Each movement inherits material from its predecessor3. The work is modular. This means that the 1st, 4th and 7th movements can be presented together as the symphony proper if full staging is not possible. The movements that double as concertos can be presented separately in their own right, hence their individual opus numbers.1. The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

The work was begun in 1930, and completed at Noizay on October 1, 1936. At the beginning of the score, it reads: The variations that form the center of this work were improvised at Nazelles during long country evenings wherein the composer played portraits for friends gathered around his piano. The composition is dedicated to the memory of my aunt LIÃ?NARD, in memory of Nazelles. My orchestral transcription of this piece is for a full orchestra. In such a new quality, this music can live well on the symphonic stage, adorning many programs with its originality. But first of all, I would like to draw the attention of the choreographers to this basically danceable, diverse and brightly characteristic music. Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes. The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast. A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used. The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement. The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots. The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques. The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized. The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord. In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch. In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board. The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent. The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation. In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger. The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption. The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest. It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes. The movements are in 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4 time respectively. Duration is approx. 13:18.

When I discovered this composition of Saint-Saens written for 2 pianos, I was struck by his amazing penetration into the Polish spirit and ability to express it in bright and rich colors. On the other hand however, I could not get rid of the feeling of some heaviness and excessive density of the sound of the piano duet. In addition, the character of this music and its development are permeated with symphonic techniques inherent in orchestral compositions. These circumstances pushed me to undertake the orchestration of this work, which on the symphonic stage would have received great fame and legitimate public recognition.

The words for this song were written as a poem by my late mother-in-law Olivia Morgan (94) about the love of her adopted country Australia. She originally came from her ancestral home in England when she was 14. She spent her early years in Australia on a cattle station. Many years later she wrote a poem. Olivia asked me to set her poem to music, which I did in 1990 in the style of an anthem. It has since been performed by the local symphony orchestra and full choir. This setting is for SATB Choir and Orchestra with or without piano accompaniment. Where high the eagle flies And mighty rivers run There rolling plains of golden grain Reflect the west'ring sun In bushland's shaded scene By mountain's dreaming haze There bird-land calls cascading falls Combine their songs of praise. Our country's bounteous gifts Extend from shore to shore In history's place, Her pride and grace Will live forever more This land that keeps our heart Afar though we may roam On land or sea Yet still to be Australia our dear home.
