The name John Field isn't as well-known as Mozart, Beethoven, or Chopin, but it should be. Field was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1782 and died in 1837. He was not only a phenomenal pianist, but a highly skilled composer. This is an orchestral arrangement of the first of four piano sonatas written by John Field. This download contains the first of the two movements of Field's first piano sonata.Instruments used: Flutes, Oboes, B flat Clarinets, Bassoons, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1086971). Scored for baritone (or counter-tenor) soloist, mixed chorus and orchestra (2222/2200/timp/2perc/hp/cel/mand/strings). Fêtes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy’s friend Louis Laloy in November, 1913. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice of 1912 entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, ‘Les Masques’, involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine’s comedy Les Uns et les autres (1884). The action is set in a park à la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin.. This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L’Isle joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy’s scenario, the masqueraders then sing extracts from Verlaine’s ‘A la promenade’ (from Fêtes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.

Originally composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1710-1827) and arranged for orchestra by Scott Fields Davis. This download contains the second of the three movements. This movement was originally in D flat Major. However, this arrangement is in A flat Major. The new key setting allows each instrument the opportunity to play in its optimal range. Â Markings in the piano music, such as 'like cello', or in another place 'like pizzicato', suggest he was thinking in orchestral terms. Â Indeed, the earliest sketches of his 1st symphony come from the year his sonata in F-minor was published. Â Yet he worked at least 14 years on his first symphony, finally publishing it in 1876, at age 43. Â What if Brahms had orchestrated his sonata in F-minor, opus 5, publishing it as his first symphony, in his youth, rather than at age 43? Â Attempting to answer that, I embarked on a big project, to orchestrate Brahms sonata in F-minor, into a symphony. Â And you can listen to it yourself, as the music of Brahms comes shining through, as a symphony that 'might have been'. Â Though the instrument choices and dynamics adjustments for orchestra are mine, the music is all Brahms. Â See what you think. Â This is the 5th movement, the Finale. Â The music of Brahms is a long-time favorite of symphony audiences, and this could be a hit with your audience, as well.
