An Orchestral Fanfare, written for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Perth. 2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 Bb Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 French Horns, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 2 Trombones, 1 Tuba, 4 Percussion (Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbals), Harp, StringsComposer's notes:2022 was a year that sparked inspiration for me. I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. May it, and this new year, spark inspiration for you.

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

Writer-producer George Miller, the director behind the Mad Max movies, had heard about Dick King-Smith’s children’s book The Sheep-Pig and dreamed about turning it into a movie. When it came to writing the score he turned to Jerry Goldsmith, with whom he had previously collaborated on his segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie (Nightmare at 20,000 Feet). Fate however, stepped in when Jerry sent his work in progress. Miller felt that the music was too beautiful and lyrical, that it should play up the darker moments in the story. With a typically busy schedule, Goldsmith had no time available to rewrite the score, so the process of selecting a replacement began. Babe was being produced in Australia, which made communicating with LA-based composers a challenge, so six local composers were invited to audition, and Nigel Westlake was selected for the role. Westlake deftly weaves well-known classical themes such as Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony and Delibes’ Pizzicati from the ballet Sylvia into his score, which sparkles and shines like the unprejudiced heart of the titular pig.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. During Malaysia's third Covid-19 Lockdown, in January 2021, I composed a short piece for solo trombone each day for 14 days, performing them each evening in an online stream from my apartment balcony. This work fleshes out the themes from Lockdown Miniatures #1 and #4. The first two themes, from Lockdown Miniatures #1 (subtitled Here We Go Again), reflect the angst and uncertainty of beginning yet another lockdown — with all businesses once again closed, police roadblocks preventing movement beyond the neighborhood, and all human contact reduced to a small screen. The third theme, from Lockdown Miniatures #4 (subtitled Loss), is meant to express the raw emotion associated with losing loved ones over the previous ten months. This piece was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miran Vaupotic, on 26 February 2022 as part of a project by Parma Recordings. The album, titled Sparks: Eye of London, was released in October 2022 on Navona Records.

Two years later Mendelssohn wanted to present the work to the young piano virtuoso Delphine von Schauroth, whom he was courting at the time. He reworked it under the new title Rondo capriccioso, making it even more brilliant and adding a moving introductory adagio (thus described in a letter to Fanny). In this form, the work still presents all good pianists with a rewarding challenge. I did a bravoure piece for flute and orchestra respecting the Mendelssohn style.
