Since relocating to Southern Chile in 2016, composer Edgar Girtain has been immersed in the music of hisadopted home, frequently performing with folk musicians in rural areas through the Los Lagos region. Two Andean Airs draws on a folkmusic style native to northern Chile (cultures of the Andean Plateau). The first piece was drawn from the third of composer's well-known Trios for Flute, Violin and Cello, while the second comes from a suite of Huaynos composed and arranged for a latin-american orchestra of students that the composer co-directs in Puerto Montt. Both are outdoor style pieces, typical of what might be heard performed by brass or pan-flute bands at religious festivals in the deserts of northern Chile.

To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral). This condensed suite may make the music more approachable for some orchestras, and offers something shorter to concert programmes wishing to feature other major works alongside, instead of performing all 24 preludes.I hope you enjoy performing this suite as much as I enjoyed arranging it.Instrumentation: Piccolo 2 Flutes 2 Oboes Cor Anglais 2 Clarinets in Bâ? This arrangement for full orchestra of the famous Bizet opera Carmen strings together all the major (and some of the secondary) themes into a 20-minute medley: - Prelude (Introduction to Act 1 Les Toreadors & Prelude to Act 1) - Chorus of the Street Boys (Act 1 Le garde montante) - Habanera - Song and Recitative - Seguidilla and Duet (Act 1 Seguedille) - Finale (Act 1 Finale) - Act II: Entr'acte (Prelude to Act 2 Les dragons d’Alcala) - Gypsy Song (Act 2 Danse Boheme) - Toreador Song (Act 2 Chanson du Toreador) - Act III: Entr'acte (Prelude to Act 3 Intermezzo) - Sextet and Chorus (Introduction to Act 3 Marche des contrebandiers) - Air (Act 3 Nocturne) - Act IV: Entr'acte (Prelude to Act 4 Aragonaise) - March and Chorus – Finale (Act 4 Procession of the Toreadors) All the themes featured in the two orchestral suites by Ernest Guiraud are included. There are, however, major differences: - the themes appear in chronological order (like in the opera) - there are no distinct movements, this is a 20-minute romp featuring tune after tune - most parts, especially repetitive songs, are abridged to varying degrees - where appropriate, sections seamlessly segue into the next- the major tunes (Les Toreadors, Gypsy Song, Toreador Song) allow for applause afterwards - the orchestration follows the original (double woodwinds, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, harp, timpani and 3 percussion, strings) with minimal changes to compensate for missing vocal lines Further cuts are possible and easy to make due to the clearly marked sections. This arrangement is meant to rival the orchestral suites in excitement and colours - but in a more organic/continuous format. It is ideal for any level orchestra (intermediate+) in any kind of setting.
