Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. The National Anthem of Montenegro arranged for Symphony Orchestra. There are versions for Brass Quintet & String Orchestra in my on-line stores.Oj, svijetla majska zoro (Montenegrin Cyrillic: „Ој, Ñвијетла мајÑка зоро, trans. Oh, Bright Dawn of May) is the official National anthem of Montenegro adopted in 2004. Before becoming the anthem, it was a popular folk song of the Montenegrins, with many variations of its text. The oldest one is dated to the 2nd half of the 19th century, known as Oh, Bright Dawn of Heroism, oh!, a popular Montenegrin folk song.It was played in public for the first time in 1863 in the national theater in Belgrade. It was a component song of the Battle of Grahovo or blood feud in Montenegro (Бој на Грахову или крвна оÑвета у Црној Гори) heroic play in three parts. It is unknown if the text’s authors are also the play’s, namely the following Montenegrin composer/writers: the father of Marko Car Jovan Car and an unknown Obrad Vitković. The play and the Montenegrin folk song was also played/sung in the National Theater again in 1870 and 1876. Its first record in Montenegro itself dates to 1887, when it was included into the regular school program of Montenegrin national songs for pupils in the 3rd grade. It was reconfirmed in the teacher’s plan for Montenegrin schools of 1888, which speculates that it must have been an established folk song for decades by then.Sekule Drljević, party strongman of a minor political party which was active in the Yugoslavian Kingdom in Montenegro known as the Montenegrin Federalist Party, rewrote the text and published it in 1937 in the book of then’s Croatian writer of Montenegrin origins Savić Marković Å tedimlija known as Crvena Hrvatska (Red Croatia), which confounded the thesis not of a Serb ethnic origin of the Montenegrins, which was the dominant one back then, but rather from the Croats. Its name was Eternal Ours… (VjeÄna naÅ¡a). When Nikola Hercigonja wrote down Oh, Bright Dawn of May shortly after WWII ended after 1945, he erroneously concluded that Drljević was the original wholesale author of this song, which also led to its considerable decline in popularity as a Montenegrin folk song altogether.The song survived until today under various names as a popular Montenegrin folk song under the name Oh, Bright Dawn of May (Oj svijetla majska zoro). This version of the song has been one of the several versions proposed in 1993 during the first discussion on the official anthem, however, on which there was no consensus because of the disputed melodic value.Need an anthem fast? Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra – Description and performance notes. The concerto provides a challenge for the performer and is delightful to the listener. It is written in the standard three movement concerto format: fast – slow – fast. A variety of musical colors, rhythms, and techniques are used. The first movement begins with an Adagio section which is marked Poco Rubato, followed by Allegro for the balance of the movement. The second movement is darker, and perhaps, a little sullen. The third movement is bright and harkens back to the guitar’s Spanish roots. The movement is happy and light, it has an abrupt and unexpected ending. Throughout the concerto the guitarist will use a wide range of techniques. The full sound spectrum of the guitar is utilized. The guitarist is asked to perform several rapid arpeggios (noted as Finger Roll) wherein the performer utilizes the thumb and fingers to rapidly play the notes in a chord. In other places, chords are to be played with three fingers playing up and the thumb to play down, using the nail (Flamenco style) – up and down referring to pitch. In the first movement, the thumb is used to tap the sound board. The guitar part is partially edited with suggested fingerings for clarity of intent. The balance is left for to the performer’s interpretation. In the second movement there is a completed tremolo section which requires the player to include the little or c finger. The inclusion of the c finger keeps the melodic line following without interruption. The second movement also has the melody played in artificial harmonics with the thumb playing simple a bass line. The third movement is the shortest. It has a challenging arpeggio pattern that uses the fingers strumming up and the thumb strumming down with rapid chord changes. The movements are in 4/4, 6/8, and 3/4 time respectively. Duration is approx. 13:18.

The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter. I. From the Faraway Nearby The highly charged contrast of closely viewed foreground details and hugely distant horizons, which typified the New Mexican Views of O'Keeffe, was not a mere optical illusion. The large scale, bright light, and clear air of the region permitted one to see for the proverbial forever, and the juxtaposition of faraway and nearby was an integral aspect of desert vision. Soft dynamics and orchestration represent the faraway while the loud dynamics and orchestration represent the nearby. Near the end, the faraway and nearby begin to merge. II. Jimson Weed, White Flower No. 1 This painting depicts one of O'Keeffe's favorite subjects: a magnified flower. To her, the delicate blooms stood as some of the most overlooked pieces of naturally occurring beauty, objects that the bustling contemporary world ignored. So she made it her mission to highlight their complex structures, explaining: When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. This movement is slow and lyrical reflecting the beauty of the close-up image. III. Red Hills and Bone O'Keeffe 's most effective composition of bones in the landscape appeared in 1941, with Red Hills and Bone; the large canvas is also among her most ambitions evocations of the arid country of which she was by then an owner, having purchase the house at Ghost Ranch the preceding year. In 1939, O'Keeffe had written of the bones as strangely more living than the animals walking around, and in the 1941 painting her response is given visual from. The minimalistic noodling represents the red hills and the bold triplets represent the mystique of the bone. IV. Ladder to the Moon This painting shows a handmade wooden ladder suspended in the turquoise sky. In the background are the pitch-black Pedernal Mountains and a pearl colored half moon. This painting was very similar to a picture taken of O'Keeffe and her surroundings at Ghost Ranch. In the picture, a large wooden ladder is leaned against an outer wall of a patio from where it rises up into the sky with the Pedernal Mountains in the background. In Pueblo culture the ladder is used to symbolize the link between the Pueblos and cosmic forces. The fact that the ladder is pointed up in the sky may represent the link between nature and the cosmos. While there are motifs that depict specifics of the painting, such as the scale-wise ascending and descending figure for the crescent mood and rising arpeggios for the ladder, the focus of this movement is the spiritual element. The music rises and grows in intensity from a ground bass-like theme to a soaring ending.

Symphony No 22 Galaxymbion is a 7-movement symphonic setting of scenes from my novel The Galaxymbion Odyssey MOVEMENT 1 – The Kytonian Expanse TOTAL NUMBER OF BARS = 2670 TOTAL DURATION = 125 minutes General methodology of composition;1. No fixed tonal centre2. Each movement inherits material from its predecessor3. The work is modular. This means that the 1st, 4th and 7th movements can be presented together as the symphony proper if full staging is not possible. The movements that double as concertos can be presented separately in their own right, hence their individual opus numbers.1. The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

This piece represents that with swirling woodwinds, tornadic brass, and frightening percussion. In the center of the piece, there is a calm chorale to represent the eye of the storm. After that, it goes back to the evil cyclone themes.

The première of Daudet's play, L'Arlésienne, with incidental music by Bizet, given at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872, was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber, however, was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion, for the première of the first Arlésienne suite took place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Bizet, however, did not turn to preparing a second suite from L'Arlésienne. Some four years after Bizet's death, the success of the first suite may have prompted his original publisher to commission the arrangement of more excerpts from the Arlésienne MS from Bizet's good friend Ernest Guiraud who had earlier written recitatives and put together a ballet for Carmen.In 1872 Bizet wrote the incidental music to Daudet’s famous tragedy ‘L’Arlésienne’. He had to tailor his composition to an orchestra of only 26 players, but these limited forces turned out to pose a stimulating challenge rather than an obstacle. Shortly after the premiere, he arranged four of the movements and formed them into the Suite No. 1 for large orchestra. The Suite No. 2 was arranged by Ernest Guiraud four years after Bizet’s death.

The resulting affect action is described as rage or fury, combined with a state of mind of uncontrolled excitement in the sense of being beside oneself or out of one's senses.The personification of these affects was in Greek and Roman mythology with the trio of vengeance goddesses, the Erinyens (Latin furia) called: Alekto (the incessant, the never resting), Megaira (German: Megäre, the envious anger) and Tisiphone (the Vengeance avenging the murder, represented with a dog's head and bat's wings), and another, that of Nemesis (the reconciling justice). Already in antiquity they were depicted in sculptures, embossed on coins or immortalized as images on amphorae.They appear in all eras of fine arts, sometimes in female, male or androgynous form, e.g. as avenging angels, or as hybrid beings between humans and animals. This remarkable history and reception inspired Rainer Fabich to create this new orchestral work from his MYThS series. PEGASUS - Ride on Wings, ULYSSES - Prélude to an Odyssey and THE AMONZS - Myth and Projection have already been released. As the title suggests, this is frantically wild music (Allegro molto vivace) that seems to run away, like an action film with fast motives and runs of strings and woodwinds, combined with strong accents of brass and massive percussion Set. Alternations of straight and asymmetrical beats illustrate erratic sequences of movement, as are typical of scenes with the highest intensity, especially in films (e.g. a chase). In the jazzy middle section, the furies calm down a little, before they pick up speed again in a bombastic third section and increase to the point of ecstasy.
