Bowie wrote the song as a parody of Frank Sinatra's My Way. Life on Mars? was recorded on 6 August 1971 at Trident Studios in London, and was co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. Bowie's backing band consisted of guitarist and string arranger Mick Ronson, bassist Trevor Bolder, drummer Mick Woodmansey and Strawbs member Rick Wakeman on piano. Life on Mars? is primarily a glam rock ballad, with elements of cabaret and art rock; it has a complex structure that includes chord changes throughout. The lyrics are about a girl who goes to a cinema to escape reality, and include surreal images that reflect optimism and the effects of Hollywood.At the height of Bowie's fame as Ziggy Stardust, RCA Records issued Life on Mars? as a single on 22 June 1973 in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number three. To promote the single, photographer Mick Rockfilmed a video that shows Bowie in make-up and a turquoise suit singing the song against a white backdrop. Bowie frequently performed Life on Mars? during his concerts and the song has appeared on numerous compilation albums. Scott remixed the song in 2003 and 2016, the latter being a stripped down mix.Life on Mars? is considered by commentators as one of Bowie's greatest songs, and one of the best songs of all time. Critics have praised Bowie's vocal performance and growth as a songwriter. The song's title was given to the British television series Life on Mars, and films and other television programmes have included Life on Mars?. Artists including Barbra Streisand, and Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, have recorded cover versions of the song; and following Bowie's death in 2016, Life on Mars? was frequently chosen as a tribute to the artist.

Jerry‘s feeling was that MacArthur was a totally different person, and it would be a real challenge to write about another military figure but do it in a different manner. He said “it‘s much more flamboyant in a different sort of way, and it was an interesting task“. Patton enjoyed resounding critical praise and has since been elevated to the designation of a classic. The film won Academy Awards for nearly all of its major players, with composer Jerry Goldsmith being an unfortunate exception. Goldsmith had already written many scores for World War II topics in his short mainstream career, but none would prove as memorable in any part as the march from Patton, a concert hall staple for the composer throughout his career. Despite the dominance of this theme and the fact that only roughly thirty minutes of music was employed in such a long picture, the effect of his score on the film is far more complicated than many people may realize. While the famous march, with all its bravado from brass, flutes, and snare, easily represents the identity of the character and war, Goldsmith’s work for the film actually spends more time dwelling on the deeper meanings of life that the general himself explored.Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. The Valley of the Dry Bones is based off of the chapter in Ezekiel The Valley of the Dry Bones (from the Bible) symbolizes the Israelites' revival and God's power and sovereignty Ezekiel 37:1-6The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones. He caused me to pass among them round about, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley; and lo, they were very dry. He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, You know.” Again He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.’ Thus says the Lord God to these bones, ‘Behold, I will cause breath [spirit] to enter you that you may come to life. I will put sinews on you, make flesh grow back on you, cover you with skin and put breath in you that you may come alive; and you will know that I am the Lord.’”Ezekiel is called by the Lord, and given a vision. Ezekiel is set down in a valley full of bones. This is not some symbolic imagery, but these are literally dead people, long dead. God asks Ezekiel if he believes the bones can come back to life, and Ezekiel says only the Lord knows. God gives Ezekiel a prophesy concerning all the dead. At a future date, God will cause breath (His Spirit) to enter the bones so that they may come to life. God will use His power (which is always through the Spirit of God) to cause these dead to be resurrected. We know this isn’t symbolic of spiritual death and spiritual life because of the graphic imagery that is used.

Origins musically represents three important recent scientific explorations of space and matter that are designed to give humans a better understanding of the origins of the universe and the origins of life. The first movement, Black Holes and Cyclotrons, represents the quest to understand and reproduce the relationship between gravitation and energy that scientists believe caused the big bang and our ever-expanding universe. The music of this movement represents the danger inherent in these explorations into the unknown. There are sections of the movement that are lighter in nature that depict subatomic particles dancing around in a particle accelerator. The end of the movement increases in tempo reflecting the ever-increasing speeds of particle accelerators and the gravitational pull of black holes. The Surface of Mars is the title of the second movement that depicts NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity have explored the surface of Mars and have revealed the surface as being mostly a barren landscape void of life. The outer sections of this movement reflect this discovery. The middle section of the movement represents the excitement of one of the rovers finding indications of water having existed on Mars and therefore the possibility that life may have also existed. The third movement, Window Into Deep Space, is a tribute to the Hubble Space Telescope. This movement has many uplifting sections as the Hubble Space Telescope has provided views of the universe never before seen from Earth. It also has sections of anxiety as this mission was wrought with several failures that nearly derailed it. The promise of increased understanding of our universe is reflected in the ending of this composition. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.
