It's a sentimental offering, but one intended to raise awareness of the need to support organizations that shelter and care for animals in order to find them homes where they can live long, happy and healthy lives.The musical underscore starts off dramatic but soon becomes more atmospheric to underscore the poem. The poem is timed somewhat to the music, however, each reader will offer their own interpretation and cadence to fit within the overall fabric of the music. The score is particularly suited for professional orchestras especially since it calls for two harpists and a full compliment of strings, winds, and brass, and a variety of interesting percussion. Everything about the score is intended to underscore the poem reader, so dynamics are generally soft and the score will work and sound great even with orchestras lacking some of the instrumentation.Portions of all proceeds from sales of this score will be donated to charities supporting the care of Dogs, Cats, and other animals and it is the composer's/poet's wish that live performances will make the most of the symphonic hall setting to encourage others to donate generously to organizations that promote animal well-being.

I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. Our civilization once used to believe in depth and reading and art; now abstract thought is changing into a simplistic, superficial society where one is consumed with the quick Starbucks or Twitter fix. It's all lightness of being today. We don't celebrate anticipation anymore, people don't want to put the time in. This symphony is about the collapse of that whole ethos. The phrase in the lyrics that says 'kill the philharmonic' doesn't mean that literally. It's a metaphor for a society that has no use for the philharmonic. We're losing these things. Pretty soon John Coltrane and Miles Davis, along with all jazz and classic music, will become museum pieces. We used to have a culture that cherished these, but in a super simplistic society, there's just no room for them. Not wishing to waste it, I have now revised it and finally prepared its score and parts for performance.InstrumentationPiccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bflat clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns in F, 2 Bflat Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Bass trombone, Glock, 2 harps, celesta, large string section to accommodate divisi into 3 for all except the basses.Duration – 3 minutes approx.All the parts are fairly straightforward, except the harps and celesta, which I believe to be of some challenge.If it was to find a place in a concert programme, I believe it would be a lovely encore – a really loving way to send your audience home from a great night out. She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Each of the three movements deals with symbols, specifically those that have autobiographical significance to the composer. The first movement, Klee on Loan, pays homage to the famous abstract expressionist painter. The gestures are traditional and all easily identifiable, from the sweeping Mahleresque beginning to the Bartok meets The Rolling Stones motifs found at mid movement. These are the composer's attempts to represent Klee's crosses and arrows through some familiar and abstract sound. Klee's genius, I believe, is found in his ability to make very generic symbols very abstract. The second movement, Roadside Memorial, is a musical journey that goes the route of a dangerous and ominous highway replete with roadside crosses and flowers. Present are the sounds of radio static and the motorist's attempts to find an interesting station in the midst of a punishing blizzard, all the while praying to make the trek safely home. Ikonoklastic is the third and least serious movement of the three, sporting a playful and somewhat schizophrenic waltz. There are childlike melodies set against more serious romantic style gestures. The blending of the serious with the less serious at times combines to create contrapuntal moments. The final movement is the most sublime of the four, and it is solely based upon a loping, adieu-like gesture. The line is continually recycling itself, and the piano takes the role of psychopomp as it escorts the movement to its out of body conclusion.

Published by Hans Rudolf (A0.1199137). Gnossienne No. 1 is a solo piano piece by French composer Erik Satie. It was written in 1890 and published in 1893. The piece is part of a series of six Gnossiennes and is perhaps Satie's best known and most frequently performed work.The piece is written in a slow tempo and is marked Lent (slow) and douloureux (painful). It has a simple and repetitive melody played over a slow, dreamy accompaniment. The harmonies are also very sparse, often consisting of only two or three chords.The title Gnossienne is thought to have been invented by Satie himself, and its meaning is not entirely clear. Some suggest that it is a reference to the ancient Greek city of Gnossos on the island of Crete, while others believe that it is an allusion to gnosis, a mystical knowledge in which Satie was interested. For me, I translate Gnossienne simply as knowledge.Overall, Gnossienne No. 1 is a beautiful and haunting piece of music that has captured the imagination of audiences and performers alike for over a century.My orchestration attempts to counter the painful character, at least in part, with a rebellion and triumph over pain. The most unusual detail is the rhythmization by the timpani, which can be perceived as a driving, an eternity of the same or also as a will to continue.

Origins musically represents three important recent scientific explorations of space and matter that are designed to give humans a better understanding of the origins of the universe and the origins of life. The first movement, Black Holes and Cyclotrons, represents the quest to understand and reproduce the relationship between gravitation and energy that scientists believe caused the big bang and our ever-expanding universe. The music of this movement represents the danger inherent in these explorations into the unknown. There are sections of the movement that are lighter in nature that depict subatomic particles dancing around in a particle accelerator. The end of the movement increases in tempo reflecting the ever-increasing speeds of particle accelerators and the gravitational pull of black holes. The Surface of Mars is the title of the second movement that depicts NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity have explored the surface of Mars and have revealed the surface as being mostly a barren landscape void of life. The outer sections of this movement reflect this discovery. The middle section of the movement represents the excitement of one of the rovers finding indications of water having existed on Mars and therefore the possibility that life may have also existed. The third movement, Window Into Deep Space, is a tribute to the Hubble Space Telescope. This movement has many uplifting sections as the Hubble Space Telescope has provided views of the universe never before seen from Earth. It also has sections of anxiety as this mission was wrought with several failures that nearly derailed it. The promise of increased understanding of our universe is reflected in the ending of this composition. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.
