Lily Park consists of three movements entitled Wind Bell, Goblin Lights, and Rock of Ages. The three movements are based on my personal impression of the cemetery, Lily Park, where all my grandparents are buried. The first movement, the shortest in duration, is slow and calm. It is introductory in quality, and expresses the pictorial impression of the cemetery by using various tone colors. This movement utilizes mixed instrumental consorts to project the concept of moderation and serenity. There is a close connection between the first movement and the last movement, as both features a wind-bell sound, a variety of percussion instruments, and slow tempi. The first movement focuses on the external appearance of the cemetery such as the quiet atmosphere, the wind, and the sound of bell ringing. The third movement represents the mental and emotional aspects of grief, memory of the funerals and reminiscent of my grandparents. The second movement is an imaginary night scene. For thousands of years, Korean have believed that goblins roam the tombs at night and are visible as blue and red lights. The movement is fast, busy and somewhat bizarre and whimsical, depicting the motion of the goblin lights. This contrasts with other two movements, thus the overall form becomes an arch shape. In addition, only the second movement is sectionalized by three different musical ideas while the first and the last movements are through composed with a single idea.I. Wind BellThe first movement expresses the general images of the cemetery; calm atmosphere, blowing wind, clean air, and a wide green field. The place is so quiet that the only the wind-bell ringing as the wind blows can be heard. In order to depict the wind-bell sound along with other optic and aural images, I create various tone colors by using various instrumental combinations in different transpositions and registrations.

When I began this piece, I was thinking about my father and my grandparents and how they left their families and the comfort of familiar surroundings in Italy and immigrated to America for a new life during the early part of the 20th Century. Just as there is an element of danger in taking a trip across the ocean, there is the excitement of the voyage and the promise of a new experience visiting a place you have never been before.  The trip itself is an adventure since you will spend several days aboard the ship, and in days that have long since faded from the calendar, these trips took weeks and even months. This piece attempts to capture the spirit of the adventure and excitement of such a trip. The piece starts with the sounding of the horn and the ship embarks.  This leads to a beautiful lyrical section and later there is a spritely gigue.  Through these various sections I attempted to capture the various moods of the passengers during various stages of this long journey. She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

There is a brief narration that is juxtaposed with antiphonal trumpet, and then the setting of Psalm 150 for the remainder of the piece. This features the 3 tenors and utilizes both English and Latin text. The work is 10 minutes in duration.

Published by MarcoPolo Press (A0.1021047). Sinfonietta No.1 (Transformations) is an intermediate orchestral pieces in four movements that is almost 10 minutes (9:53) long. It is called a sinfonietta because, while it has the elements of a full symphony, it is shorter. The entire piece is based on the motif in the first bar of the first movement, and that motif get transformed (hence the subtitle Transformations) in many different ways. It is like how a person changes in various situations and in various stages of their life. The first movement (Allegretto) is in sonata form, the second (Andante Adagio) is in a quasi ABA form, the third (Scherzoish) is a Baroque-like quasi scherzo and trio with a modified scherzo at the end, and the fourth (Theme & Variations) is a theme with 3 variations, but elements of the first 3 movements are repeated at the end. .

Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Bramshill was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the police staff college and was premiered by the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In 2011 it undertook some quite serious revision. Bramshill House was until recently the home of the Police Staff College. In 1953 the Home Office purchased Bramshill from Lord Brocket. There is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the time of Domesday and the Norman Conquest. The present building was constructed principally by Edward Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, between c. 1605-1625. The music is written in large ternary form as a concert rondo. There are features within which depict and draw together various facets of the early history of Bramshill House as a Jacobean structure with that of its current role as the police staff college. After a declamatory eighteen bar opening in the key of C minor the piece leads towards the principal theme - it is introduced by the horn, quietly accompanied by chords from the clarinets dipping in and out of the chalumeau register - a haunting, ethereal theme that depicts the mystery of the ancient building and its numerous reported wraiths. The theme develops and is pronounced giacoso in the strings with light accompaniment in the higher woodwinds. A restatement of the main theme is followed by a section, fugato; this depicts a police officer on the beat in the early hours of a cold, wet, winter’s night. This theme transmutes into a quasi-stately dance such as may have been performed in Bramshill’s great withdrawing room or the long gallery in the 1600’s. A series of 6/3 chords then develop into what sounds akin to a police siren; the section culminates in a wash of sound with police theme, stately dance and siren sounding simultaneously. In the final section, the principal theme is reiterated in various guises and sub-themes are further explored.

Richard Sleight was soloist in the Isle of Axholme Symphony Orchestra's later performance. About the piece'To The Moon' takes inspiration from the Earth's Moon, the beauty andmajesty of the celestial body and all it encompasses. It also charts the energy and excitement surrounding the space race and the ultimate goal to get to the Moon! The piece helps to explore extended tonalities and considers a different approach to Orchestral writing and performance choreography.This piece can be performed by any number of performers, ideally, traditional Orchestral numbers work well but experimentation with larger/fewer numbers on various parts within the different 'ensembles' can produce exciting results.Performance directionsThe ideal performing conditions for this piece are that the orchestra are split into 4 'ensembles' as indicated in the score. Each ensemble is grouped in a way that means all ensembles are pointing to the centre (see diagram 1 below). The audience should similarly be positioned around the room in a circle behinf each of the ensembles. Therefore, an ideal focal point for this performance would be a visual representation of the Moon in the centre of the room, ideally lit in some way. Representations of the Moon may take the form of a 3D lit representation (potentially made, perhaps a local Art project) or a projected representation onto the floor of the performance space. TheMoon should be of sufficient size as to not be lost in the space and careful planning should be done to ensure optimal visual effect. The role of the conductor during the performance ideally would be minimal, perhaps sat in one of the ensembles providing minimal direction. However, due to the capabilities of the performers, the conductor may have to take a more active role in the performance.
