The third and final movement of my tone poem about Prague. This represents the Czech people through one of the national dances. Inspired by my visits in 2007 and 2009, this movement is divided into two distinct sections. The opening is slow and quite stately in 7/8 but with a clear pulse of short-short-long. which later reverses to long-short-short as it moves towards the faster section. Tis is in a less straightforward meter, creating the feel of an almost uncontrollable whirl of dancing. This pattern of slow and fast sections is typical of Czech dances, in fact this movement was largely inspired by those of Dvorak.

Tempo IThe title of this composition might encourage the listener to conjure up visions of a primitive tribal fire ritual, or possibly an entertaining dance performance with fiery hoops and batons. Both are valid reactions and neither of these interpretations would expect a specific program in the music. But an environmental theme can be discerned in the composition by interpreting the opening section as depicting a “furious” wildfire, while the quiet middle section “contemplates” the scene of devastation left behind in the fire’s wake with idyllic memories of what it was like before the fire. The final section would recall the fire’s fury and serve as a warning for the future if something isn't done to combat wildfire-causing climate change.Fire Dance is scored for solo violin, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, bells, timpani, 2 percussion, piano, and strings. Commissioned by the Fort Smith Symphony - John Jeter, Conductor John Trumbull (June 6, 1756 - November 10, 1843) is perhaps the most overlooked of the Founding Fathers of The United States. Born and raised in Connecticut, John Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull (October 12, 1710 - August 17, 1785), Governor of Connecticut from 1769 to 1784, the only Royal Governor to side with the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Trumbull fought in the revolution, witnessing Bunker Hill and using his artistic abilities to sketch the British Works at Boston. Later, he was appointed second personal aide to General Washington, and in June 1776 he served as deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates. Trumbull resigned from the army in 1777 over a dispute about the dating of his commission. In 1780 Trumbull traveled to London to study under Benjamin West: It was West who urged Trumbull to paint small pictures of the War of Independence, the works which would make him famous (he painted around 250 during his lifetime). In September of 1780, Continental troops captured British agent Major John Andre, after news of this reached Great Britain, Trumbull was arrested in retaliation. He was imprisoned for seven months. After the War, Trumbull again traveled to London, and then to Paris. It was here that Trumbull began work on two of the works depicted in this piece. He made sketches for the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis and, with the help of Thomas Jefferson, the US minister to France, he began working on The Declaration of Independence. In addition to paintings depicting the revolution, Trumbull painted numerous portraits, including those of George Washington, George Clinton (Governor of New York), Alexander Hamilton (the source of the $10 bill), and John Adams. I was tasked with composing a piece which would be educational for the students in attendance. I ended up writing a piece that would have educational material both in its musical construction and its subject matter. Trumbull's use of color, especially darker hues, and the structure of his paintings informed the construction of the piece. Three specific paintings influenced the work: The Capture of the Hessisans at the Battle of Trenton, The Declaration of Independence, and The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis. A recurring theme in the work of Trumbull is how the central act is always depicted at the center, with opposing groups on either side. The piece derives its form from this trait, casting the two large battle sections on the outsides, with the central act of the Revolutionary War in the center (The Declaration of Independence). The only percussion in the piece are drums, lending a certain militaristic feeling to the work, and evoking images of marching armies. Extended techniques are used repeatedly, casting a shade of uncertainty around the military campaigns (Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware and the seige at Yorktown), while The Declaration of Independence is scored in strict time and with more traditional harmonies, solidifying the event as the central moment of American history.

Vilson's descriptions of the tales that go with these melodies were a great help in setting the tone of this work. Many thanks to Vilson and Kandelab for introducing me to these wonderful melodies and rich cultural heritage. Minis Azaka is known as the great Minister of Agriculture in Haitian Vodou. Iwa peasants bring grievances to him and also reach out to him for prosperity.An invitation is made to a gathering along the countryside and this piece introduces a dignified Minis Azaka entering a hall adorned for his arrival. His followers trail behind him. He sits to listen to their gripes, but also joins them in dance as he isalso a well known dancer. He exits with the same reverence he entered, then disappears into the fields with his entourage. This piece expresses a veil of mystery and darkness setting the tone of great honor and respect. The Nago drum reference is included with the parts. The pattern should be played in reference to the slash marking in the score. The reference is meant as a guide and liberty may be taken with the pattern.

It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings.The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan.The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song.The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Bramshill was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the police staff college and was premiered by the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In 2011 it undertook some quite serious revision. Bramshill House was until recently the home of the Police Staff College. In 1953 the Home Office purchased Bramshill from Lord Brocket. There is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the time of Domesday and the Norman Conquest. The present building was constructed principally by Edward Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, between c. 1605-1625. The music is written in large ternary form as a concert rondo. There are features within which depict and draw together various facets of the early history of Bramshill House as a Jacobean structure with that of its current role as the police staff college. After a declamatory eighteen bar opening in the key of C minor the piece leads towards the principal theme - it is introduced by the horn, quietly accompanied by chords from the clarinets dipping in and out of the chalumeau register - a haunting, ethereal theme that depicts the mystery of the ancient building and its numerous reported wraiths. The theme develops and is pronounced giacoso in the strings with light accompaniment in the higher woodwinds. A restatement of the main theme is followed by a section, fugato; this depicts a police officer on the beat in the early hours of a cold, wet, winter’s night. This theme transmutes into a quasi-stately dance such as may have been performed in Bramshill’s great withdrawing room or the long gallery in the 1600’s. A series of 6/3 chords then develop into what sounds akin to a police siren; the section culminates in a wash of sound with police theme, stately dance and siren sounding simultaneously. In the final section, the principal theme is reiterated in various guises and sub-themes are further explored.

Music While You Work was a daytime radio programme of continuous live popular music broadcast in the United Kingdom twice daily on workdays from 23 June 1940 ]until 29 September 1967 by the BBC. Initially, the morning edition was generally broadcast on the BBC Home Service at 10:30am, with the afternoon edition at 3pm on the Forces/General Forces Programme - and after the war on the BBC Light Programme. Between August 1942 and July 1945, a third edition was broadcast at 10:30pm for night-shift workers.The programme began in World War II with the idea that playing non-stop popular/light music at an even tempo would help factory workers become more productive.[4][5] It originally consisted of live music (light orchestras, dance bands, brass and military bands and small instrumental ensembles). Love will forgive you everything - the song was written in 1933, the music was composed by Henryk Wars, and the words were written by Julian Tuwim (under the pseudonym Oldlen). The song was a hit in interwar Poland and remains so to this day. The song was written especially for the film The Spy in the Mask, which enjoyed a record attendance in cinemas. It was sung by Hanka Ordonówna and soon the song became her artistic showcase. Later, Ordonówna often resembled a song in the MaÅ‚e Qui Pro Quo theater. The piece performed by Ordonówna was recorded on the Syrena-Electro label, which was very popular at the time. It represents a wedding between Doña Lucrecia de Castilla and Don Tomás Rainer with the intention of making an alliance between Turkey and Spain. The investigation of this dance and its original music was made possible thanks to Aracely Sánchez (cultural researcher), Marcial Gudiel (folkloric dance researcher), and Concepción Clará de Guevara (anthropologist) for the creation of the work “Panchimalco†in 1982 work that was commissioned by the National Dance School of El Salvador “Morena Celariéâ€. The editors of the “Diccionario de la Música Española e Hispanoamericana†(Dictionary of Spanish and Hispanic Music) found this dance was unique in its genre in America and the Caribbean making “Los Chapetones†something exclusive from El Salvador. For this work, a part of each one of the sones is transformed in its rhythm or intervals to put them in melodies or in lines for the bass that have been harmonized in a different way while interacting with themes created especially for this work. The title, which in Nahuat means to marry, also serves as a reference to the union between the traditional themes used and the composer’s own musical language. Munamiktia (To marry) was written for the Salvadoran Composers Competition organized by the Pan American Symphony Orchestra (PASO) in Washington, DC. Given its originality, the Jury decided, after a long deliberation, to award it second place. The World Premiere will take place during their 21/22 season after PASO resumes activities due to COVID.* The actual World Premiere took place on March 25th, 2023 in Washington D.C. In the region of the Latin American Andes, more precisely the tableau called ayacuchano is an art form very representative of the folklore of the region. Taking this idea of micro-stories, the work narrates four scenes of a day that begins at dawn and ends with the town's festival. Each story corresponds to the four sections of the music, which are performed successively. First tableau: Autumn morning lights. The change of season is perceived in the ashen morning lights of the autumn season, the sun rises lightly with a slight warmth, giving the ochre color that dominates the landscape a sense of tranquility and reflectiveness. The mood of this piece is one of contemplation. Second tableau: Noon in the town The tableau opens. It is midday. The whole town is busy with preparations for the harvest festival celebration. The music goes by with the sounds of the town and the joy of the inhabitants for the important festivity they are about to share as a community. The whole town is a great hustle and bustle. You hear barrel organs, feel the excitement of hanging banners and decorating the houses for the main parade. Third tableau. Little song for siesta time. A nostalgic voice sings an old folk song to lull the children to sleep. The voices of other adults of the town intertwine to sing a song to the sleeping children. It is a tender song that recovers the stillness and tranquility of the town at the hour when everyone returns to their homes to rest. Fourth tableau: Night of celebration. Harvest Festival The first chords of the town band can be heard in the distance, a melody invites to enter with enthusiasm to the place where the festival will take place. The dance begins, the band plays energetically and everyone participates in a dance of joy. In the most important moment of the party, the town's hymn is played, everyone joins in one voice to sing the song that distinguishes them. And now: the announcement of the winners of the harvest contest. Someone is honored and everyone applauds vigorously. Then the dancing continues again. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.1119919). Festival:(Time 7:05) This is an original, previously unpublished piece, composed specifically for the ICF festival 2022. It is a programmatic piece in 3 sections, with each section being a description of some aspect of the word Festival. I have taken the broadest definition of the word festival to give as much scope for variety as possible. The first section opens with ‘sunrise’ on the day of the festival, shown by long-held open fourth chords, with the snapping of the violin pizzicatos (perhaps) being the rattle of tent lines/guys. The bass clarinet solo then shows people waking up and stretching, yawning and just before Letter A, the descending figures throughout the ensemble bring us all together to start the festival. From Letter A, one sets off at a marching pace through the crowds. We hear a mish-mash of vendors’ calls overlaying each other, repeating variations of the same motif and this little tune develops as it moves around the festival site, sometimes loud and sometimes faint. At some point, of course, arguments break out (e.g. Letter B between the strings and brass), but generally, the mood is business-like. At Letter C, there comes a parade of minstrels through the field which eventually fades off into the distance. At Letter D, we look at a different kind of festival. Not necessarily religious, but certainly spiritual. The harp and bell sounds evoke far-eastern temples while the string harmonics evoke an eerie stillness which is broken only by the melodic fragments (based on the 4ths of the first section) which pass around the orchestra. The theme is first heard on the Cor Anglais (echoed by the harp) which gives it a warmer, less piercing, sound than the oboe. The quartal chords at b.149 denote the vast mysteries of the cosmos. As our gaze widens, we are suddenly brought back to Earth with a rush as yet another kind of festival is evoked. This time we are looking briefly at the Indian subcontinent. Where fakirs charm snakes and young boys climb ropes only to disappear. The third and final section returns us to the British Isles, where the Celts are making merry in a festival. There is dancing, singing, feasting and drinking a-plenty. And, just when you think it’s all over, there’s a final push to get another dance going. The final chords are a reminder of the opening as we finish our revels as the sun descends below the horizon in a beautiful sunset.
