Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Set in the 2060s, the series follows the exploits of International Rescue, an organisation that uses technologically-advanced rescue vehicles to save human life. The series was notable for using marionette puppets but being filmed in the style of a feature film, incorporating dynamic shooting and lighting, and three-dimensional sets and extensive use of model miniatures. Special effects were directed by Derek Meddings, who later became known for his work on the James Bond (from Live and Let Die to GoldenEye), Superman and Batman (1989) movies. During his time working on Thunderbirds and Gerry Anderson’s other Supermarionation series, Meddings and his team developed a number of innovations in the filming of miniature models and landscapes which have since become standard in the industry.Having collaborated with Anderson on six previous TV series, composer Barry Gray was the obvious choice to provide music for Thunderbirds. The first carol was originally written as a poem by Christina Rossetti and published in 1872. It has been set to music several times, but the tune most associated with the text, Cranham, was composed in 1906 by Gustav Holst. The second carol is a French-Canadian Christmas carol first written by a Jesuit missionary in 1642. This tune is also called the Huron Carol.This medley is written for orchestra with 3-5 octave bell choir and goes back and forth between the two carols several times. Every time the carol changes there is a key change, sometimes between related major and minor keys and sometimes between two closely related keys. The melody is carried by the low, middle, and high ranges of the bells at some point in the piece and the accompanying voices are quite active throughout most of arrangement. Within the orchestra parts, the melody switches between woodwinds, brass, and strings several times, exploring several different sound colors throughout the piece.In Bleak Midwinter's Moonlight is between the level 3 and level 4 range of difficulty. There are definitely passages that will require work and the multiple key changes require multiple handbell changes, but bell changes are never very abrupt and accidentals only happen in the transition passages. The most difficult part will probably be making sure the melody is always heard even when it is buried below active accompaniment. A few times the bass bells have quick passages that will require sharing of bells or a lot of practice. For orchestra, this piece should be playable by most intermediate players, though some brass parts push the comfortable extremes of the instrument.

These are the Violin Romance in G major Opus 40, the Violin Romance in F major Opus 50, the Violin Concerto in D major Opus 61 (1806) and the earlier Violin Concerto in C major WoO 5 (Hess 10). The latter was left to us as a fragment which Beethoven most probably composed in Bonn, between 1790 and 1792. The fragment contains 259 bars, fully written out and than stops abruptly….as if the score was torn in two. The composition is broken off exactly 15 bars into the development. The motif in the last known bars 258 and 259 initiated the task of joining the development as reliably as possible to the rest of the work.In the additional 258 bars, Cees took Beethovenꞌs material into consideration; also in the development, reprise and coda. The most remarkable is the coda. Cees uses a third related key here, which may seem strange at first but was used more often by Beethoven himself, for example in his Violin Concerto in D major Opus 61. It was necessary to compose this work backwards in a manner of speaking. In other words: Cees had to give all the global lines that Beethoven had so masterfully written as correct a place as possible in the score. With respect to earlier completions by colleagues, Cees did not set out by literally copying and transposing the exposition in the reprise. His aim was to write a completion as creatively as possible and still use Beethovenꞌs material and intricate weave ofvoices to the full. Hopefully this completed version will be a respected contribution to the rich violin literature

The text was written by Charles Wesley and has been used in Advent services regularly since it was written in the 1740s. The text has been set to many tunes but the one used in this version is Hyfrydol, This tune was written by Rowland Prichard about 100 years after Wesley's text and is used extensively in many hymnals but especially for this particular text. This arrangement is for orchestra with optional 3-5 octave handbell choir. The handbell arrangement unusual in that the 4 octave version does require the use of the F3 bell. Other than that this is a relatively simple, if thickly orchestrated, arrangement. There are three sections using different methods of music making, the first is a fairly straightforward setting, the second focuses on short sounds in the melody which is also in the lower voices, and the third explores musical canon before bringing back a more traditional musical setting. There are two distinct parts for most instruments with a few splitting more. Flutes, trumpets, and trombones have three parts. The trombone 3 part is intended to be bass trombone but should be playable on regular trombone and if any section only has two divisions, the lower voice should have more players unless otherwise notated. That applies to flutes and trumpets as well. There are four horn parts that do not split. The timpani part should be playable on two drums with active pedaling to change notes mid-piece, although four drums is perfectly acceptable.

In the original, the aria - here rescored for the orchestra alone - is sung by the protagonist (tenor) who yearns to return to the woods, to nature, to the origins of his animal existence. The rondo is set in a very fast dance tempo (a Tarantella?) and is in three parts: the first one is cheerful and comic, the second one lyrical, almost romantically so, whereas the third one is impetuous and dramatic. You will need this arrangement if you want the Ode an die Freude to begin with a worthy introductionGreatly reduced version of the 3rd and 4th movements of the 9th symphony. The hymn Ode an die Freude can also be performed as a single movement. Heavy brass has been added as an ad libitum instrumentation, to allow the hymn to be performed with full orchestra on occasion.The 4-part chorus can be sung even by a non-professional choir, and even by the audience, because of a convenient tessitura in A major in the hymn. The reduction of elements used from the 3rd movement leads - as an introduction - to the first passage of the hymn, and with material from the 4th movement it leads to the closing hymn. The hymn shows the lyrics for 3 verses.It has been orchestrated and arranged with full respect for Beethoven's intentions, but with an open mind to the needs of contemporary events and the needs of concert organizations and audiences. For the convenience of these events, heavy brass has been included for modern orchestras - even tuba which essentially doubles the original contrafagotto.This arrangement can be performed with, or without, a choir. The national anthem of Bulgaria arranged for Symphony Orchestra, Mila Rodino (Мила Родино [miɫɐ rɔdino], translated as Dear Motherland or Dear native land) is the current national anthem of Bulgaria.There are alternative versions for Symphony & Brass Quintet in my stores.It is based on the music and text of the song Gorda Stara Planina by Tsvetan Radoslavov, written and composed as he left to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The anthem was adopted in 1964. The text has been changed many times, most recently in 1990.Between 1886 and 1944, the Bulgarian national anthem was Shumi Maritsa (Шуми Марица); from 1950 to 1964, it was My Bulgaria, land of heroes (Balgariyo mila, zemya na geroi, Българийо мила, земя на герои); in the brief period between these two, it was the march Republiko nasha, zdravey (Републико наша, здравей!).Originally written and composed by a Bulgarian student in 1885, as he went off to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian war, the song was titled “Горда Стара планина” (“Gorda Stara planina”) [Proudly Rise the Balkan Peaks]. The original lyrics have undergone revisions since its original composition, the latest after the fall of the communist government in 1990 where verses not in the original lyrics speaking of friendship with Russia, the Communist Party, and fallen fighters were removed. Written with community orchestras in mind. Traditional music session meets the orchestra: Backyard Polka & Segue Jig is a medley of original tunes written in traditional styles. In music sessions, each tune is played 3 times before moving on to the next one. It is inherently repetitive, giving everyone a chance to play the melody. To adapt this custom to the orchestral stage, I chose a bookended structure; Polka (1) - Jig (3) - Polka (1). Each instrumental section takes a turn making the melody their own. The finale is a rousing orchestral polka band complete with an accordion if you've got it. Score sized 8.5 x 14. Parts 8.5 x 11. Duration: 4:45-5:00.
