Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

After six years of higher education study, Siobhan is now ready to move onto the next chapter of her life by writing music for a variety of studios and companies. Siobhan is confident in her pursuit of becoming a well-known composer who is known for writing music for a variety of media. She is already undertaking this task by writing for a documentary and a potential game. Siobhan feels ready to leave and cannot wait to see what this next chapter brings her. She wrote this piece as a farewell to her lecturer of her entire RCS career, Dr Oliver Searle who she has admired and adored throughout her studies. Note from the composer: Dear Oliver, Surprise, I wrote this to say thanks to you, embarrassing I know :/ So as my last final effort to embarrass both of us I wrote this into my programme note. (Kind of cringey and, as I am writing this, I’m getting totes emosh) Thank you for being the best lecturer I could have ever asked for, thank you for being a great person who is caring, kind and someone who truly listens and teaches well. I hope to make you proud in my pursuits! I will always look back on the times of terrible dad jokes (not me), trying to break my stubbornness and all the funny times we had (mostly me :P). The King Cotton March was composed in 1895 by John Philip Sousa for military band, and was written for the Cotton States and International Exposition. I've always enjoyed this particular march and found a couple different piano solo versions, but neither of them really packed the punch I was looking for. I wrote this arrangement for piano duet and then recorded both parts myself (as you can see in the video) and wanted to make it available for anyone else looking to play this great piece with a friend. Approximately an intermediate/advanced difficulty level.

This is my arrangement of Mozart's Sonata for 2 Pianos in D, K. 448, complete 3 movements, for 1 piano, 4 hands. Since it isn't so easy finding a hall or any place where there are 2 pianos laying around I decided to make my own arrangement of this marvelous composition for 1 piano, four hands. I tried to be faithful to the original music as much as possible. Each of the movements are also available separately as well. Enjoy.

Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.

The possum is an Australian native animal. It is a nocturnal animal that has adapted well to city life, being quite happy living in the roofs of houses. This piece represents the possum creeping about at night time looking for food. It is inspired by an experience I had with a baby possum one night, when I woke up to the strings on my grand piano being played. The young possum had come down my chimney and was looking for an escape from the rain. It was also fairly unhappy with being placed outside again.
