Published by OllysPianoSheets (A0.961564). Cat & Mouse Rag is a playful ragtime duet for primo players at about the Grade 3 standard. With classic ragtime syncopation in the primo part against a 'stride' style in the secondo, this duet is sure to be a popular addition to any recital programme.For the introduction, the primo (perhaps the mouse?) starts things off with a bright opening statement that is answered by the secondo player (the cat?), and then the chase begins!During the opening theme, the primo has an opportunity to tease the cat with a cheeky staccato 'interjection'. Just before this high note is an acciaccatura grace note, which should be played as quickly as possible beforehand.The middle section then modulates to G minor for a variation on the theme, after which a rallentando culminates to a brief pause in the game. There is a break (a caesura) after the pause, so try to leave a good couple of seconds of suspense before launching back into the original theme a tempo.Keep and eye out for staccato and tenuto notes, which will help to communicate the playful feel of the piece.The duet ends with a call-and-response between the primo and secondo, then a crescendo to the ending hits - with a cheeky acciaccatura grace note from the mouse, of course :).

There is the option to have the melody played an octave higher if preferred (just swap the octave treble clef vs. regular treble clef). For the secondo, the right hand has repeated triad eighth notes. Alexander Tfsasman (1906 - 1971) was a Soviet jazz pianist, composer, conductor, publisher, and activist. He was one of the greatest pioneers of jazz in the young Soviet Union, from the period of the mid-1920s until the late 1960s, when he raised to exceptional fame. He was the incarnation of a sort of Russian Gershwin, a wonderful improviser on themes by others, an exceptional piano virtuoso, successful, at least until the end of the Great Patriotic War, when jazz became taboo again in Russia. A wonderful example of Tsfasman's melodious and virtuosic composition is the Jazz Suite (ca. 1945) for piano and orchestra, transcribed for 4-hands piano by Giuseppe Di Bianco.The seductive Lyric waltz must surely have influenced Shostakovich when he wrote his Jazz Suites, while the scintillating opening (Snowflakes) and the madcap virtuosity of the Fast movement (with his cheeky hat-tip to Chopin's octaves Etude) are definitely precursors of Kapustin's style.

Secondo’s opening first four notes of Joy to the World! are answered by the first phrase of Primo’s lively, syncopated Hark! the Herald Angels Sing. A compelling rhythmic drive (lucky Secondo player) pushes the piece into high gear while Joy to the World shines, then the syncopation dissolves into a Primo-frosted Hark! the Herald Angels Sing while Secondo brings its melody forward in a new key. Before you know it, the two songs swing back together and close out the piece with a spirited syncopated flair. Fingerings are added to help facilitate reading but are merely suggestions. Pedaling is to be used at the performers’ discretion. This piece is great for any Christmas event in churches, civic gatherings, or recitals. It is an exciting way to open or close a Holiday program!

Passacaglia (2000-2012) duet 6 minutes This piece also exists in versions for organ (my original version in 2000) and orchestra (performed by Bristol University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of John Pickard in 2001). The piano duet version was finally completed in 2012. The theme is based on the ground bass from Bach’s stonking Passacaglia in C minor for organ. However, the implied harmonies of Bach’s original ground bass are treated to some twisted harmonies – where each chord is altered using a system of harmonic substitution - swapping each chord implication for a newly chosen one (Cm=C, Fm=F#, G=A, Dm=A¨, Eb=F and on it goes around the 12 chromatic notes). Each key therefore has a ‘dominant’ and ‘subdominant’ that are not the actual chords V and IV in that key, so the traditional cadences and chord relationships are supplanted by 12 individual 3-chord relationships – one set of three chords for each of the 12 (now almost exclusively major) keys. In an attempt to recreate the pulls of the traditional tonic-dominant-subdominant relationships, each key then also has a particular mode/scale with particular added notes that are designed to recreate the sense of moving away from and back towards the home chord of that key. This results in a lot of rich added harmonies and some idiomatic voice-leading. Bach’s original theme in Cm is: C G - E¨ F - G A¨ - F G - D E¨ - B C - F G - C, and in the opening statement of the ground bass this has become: C A - E F# - A B¨ - F# A - D# E - C# C - F# A - C. There are then 21 variations which modulate through a range of keys, during which the ground bass is constantly re-adjusted to fit the new harmonic areas. It starts in C major, then goes through ‘closely’ related keys (eg A major and A¨ major), and then back to C in variations 6, 9 and 11. This kind of arch then happens again but going through more distant keys before returning to C in variations 18, 19 and the final climactic variation 21. Leaving aside the structural and tonal nuts and bolts, my aim was to compose a piece that attempts to recapture some of the nobility and beauty of Bach's Passacaglia, with rich added note harmonies, and exuding an exuberant joy.
