AT THE EDGE OF A SPIRAL - for Piano Four-Hands (2004) DURATION: 10 Minutes PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: At the Edge of a Spiral for one piano, four hands is a short journey of a built intensity. It is based on few fragments, motives that are lit in different light each time. The piece starts slow, but increases its intensity and speed as it progresses, utilizing the same motives. While composing the piece, I heard about a young man that threw himself to the river. I tried to imagine that went in his mind and what brought to this dead-end. And again the idea of a built intensity, obsessive and uncompromising came to my mind. At the very end of the piece, there is a sudden drop of intensity followed by a music box passage, as if describing what is going on in the person's mind right after the jump, right after reaching the edge of his life's spiral. At the Edge of a Spiral was written and dedicated for the Silver-Garburg Piano Duo - Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. It was funded by the generous support of Miriam and Eliezer Benbassat. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.

Arrangement by concert pianist and composer Daniela Mastrandrea of my Sweet Suite - a four movement sequence originally written for string quintet. This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.

The three pieces have been perfectly arranged for the late elementary/early intermediate pianist on the higher part (primo); and a teacher or more advanced pianist on the lower part (secundo).In no. 1. the melodic line is shared between the hands in the upper part - the acciaccatura's are included, but these can be omitted if too challenging. The lower player has the chord progression, as Satie intended, only shared between the hands.In no. 2, the melodic line is doubled in the upper part (hands an octave apart). The lower part has the chord progression. In no. 3, the melodic line is again shared between the hands in the upper part - the few acciaccatura's are included, but these can be omitted if too challenging. Bar 24- 34 is an example of Satie's innovative new scales, in this case a simple six-note scale, constructed with the notes from the E minor and F# major triad chords. Arranger's note: Erik Satie often added whimsical instructions to his music: Light as an egg, Here comes the lantern, Open your head,Muffle the sound, Work it out yourself, etc. I have included, and translated, those he applied to these pieces.Your download is all THREE pieces.

Conjeturas sistemáticas (Systematic conjectures) for piano four hands A piece composed in Bremen (North Germany) between 8th and 10th March 2013, about 4 minutes long, and dedicated to Mario GarcÃa Acevedo in memoriam (who died on March 6, 2013 in Buenos Aires). The title alludes to a phrase that Mario GarcÃa Acevedo said en passant during a lecture in SADAIC remembering the twentieth anniversary of the death of Rodolfo Caracciolo: True science is a set of systematic and ordered suspicions. I altered this thought slightly, because systematic suspicions seemed to me a more suitable title for a detective novel. Musically speaking, this piece uses modulating pandiatonism, a technique that I used in several other pieces as well. Mario GarcÃa Acevedo was one of those few people who can be said to have been wise in the most complete and overwhelming sense of the word. He was one of my teachers at the (ex) National Conservatory of Music, I no longer remember teacher of what, because he was the kind of person who was an integral teacher, not of this or that. I had the pleasure of performing the European premiere of his work Amanecer in Bremen in 2008.
