A slow march composed for the staff and pupils of Gordon's School, Surrey, England. It is a pleasing piece to march to and has a mildly Caledonian feel to reflect the Scottish roots of Major General Charles Edward Gordon after whom the school is named. The march is well suited to either parade ground or marching display use but also has sufficient musical qualities to make a good concert piece. Individual instrumental parts can be supplied on request as can a piano reduction score.

The march has been designed to be simple enough for beginner brass players to also manage it, while simultaneously being entertaining. Making use of the common march rhythm, it can be instrumental for music teachers to use to train beginner brass players in the march style. It is in a simple key of G-Major (not many sharps or flats). The notes are not too high or too low for the different instruments so that beginner brass players can manage. The song is also slow enough to allow junior brassers to cope. If a tuba is also unavailable, it can be substituted by a trombone or euphonium. And best of all, who does not wish to be entertained with a joyous song on their birthday. Seeing also that there are so many birthdays in a year, this is an ideal piece to perform on many such occasions. And so, even if you are not learning the march style of brass, if there is an upcoming birthday for someone who is special to you, this is the song to use.

Checkmate is a university-level corps-style drumline cadence that utilizes snares, tenors (quads), either 5 or 6 bass drums, and marching cymbals. As the cadence plays out, it's a full-on chess game of 2-against-3, duple-against-triple, and groove-against-ram. At 88bpm, this is a slower cadence - it was written to be the on-field entrance cadence for the 2010 Marshall University Thundering Herd Drumline...but never made it to stadium. Don't try this on parade!
