The best way to learn any instrument is to have lessons from a good, experienced teacher. Although, happily, the number of such teachers is constantly growing, the recorder is still frequently taught by enthusiastic but inexperienced teachers and many players start by teaching themselves.
This series of books sets out to help learners of all ages in all three situations. Experienced teachers, who may choose to disregard much of the text as personal demonstration is always clearer than the written word, will find exercises and fine tunes a-plenty to support their own mathod at each stage. The less experienced willbenefit from many valuable teaching hints culled from long experience and may rely on the books to lead to a sound playing technique and a mastery of simple notation.
Those learning by themseves - and I started in this way - are urged to work carefully and systematically through the books, taking plenty of time to assimilate each point before moving on. For them, without the personal model provided by a live teacher, it is vitally important to listen as often as possible to fine players, in person or on record, so that they have in their mind's ear a clear notion of the kind of sound they would like to produce.
But however they start, I can only wish that all who use these books will derive as much pleasure and musical satisfaction and gain as many lasting and valued friendships as I have through this most subtle, delightful

These two tutors, with accompanying teacher's books, are for newcomers to the instrument who are beginning on the treble and so assume no previous knowledge either of the instrument or of musical notation.

Der dritte Teil der Blockflötenschule will die Lernenden in die Lage versetzen, den vollen Umfang des Instruments von c1 bis es3 in den entsprechenden Dur- und Molltonarten mit bis zu drei Vorzeichen (# bzw. b) zu nutzen. Außer den Griffen für alle vorkommenden Töne lernen sie auch einige Hilfs- und Trillergriffe samt Tonverbindungen kennen und gewöhnen sich an die Befolgung der im Notenbild enthaltenen Vorschriften. Die Kenntnis von Notenwerten wird um Sechzehntel und kompliziertere Synkopen, z.B. eine Achtelpause auf der betonten Zählzeit, erweitert. Wenn dann auch die Ausführung doppelt punktierter Werte keine Schwierigkeiten mehr bereitet, kann auf weitere rhythmische Übungen verzichtet werden. Fortgesetzt werden dagegen Übungen zu Trillern und anderen Verzierungen, die für Holzblasinstrumente charakteristisch sind. Tonleitern und Akkordzerlegungen gehören nach wie vor zum Übungsprogramm: Zunächst werden die bereits bekannten wiederholt, dann weitere mit bis zu drei Vorzeichen erarbeitet. Um das bewährte Prinzip beibehalten zu können, das jeweils eine Lekton mit zugehörigem Spielgut (Liedern und anspruchsvolleren Kompistionen) auf einer Seite Platz findet, wurden Tonleiter- und Akkordübungen in einem geschlossenen Teil am Ende des Heftes zusammengestellt. Sie weisen die gleiche Nummerierung wie die zugehörigen Lektionen auf. Sehr hilfreich ist es, sie in allen vier Artikulationen auswendig zu lernen. Jede Lektion enthält ferner einzeilige Übungen (jeweils Nr. 1) zur Erarbeitung neuer Griffe, die für eine ausgefeilte Technik unabdingbar sind. Es ist nachdrücklich davor zu warnen, diese durch vermeintlich einfachere Grundgriffe ersetzen zu wollen. Neben Volksweisen als Hauptbestandteil des Spielgutes enthalten die Lektionen zweckmäßige kleine Kompositionen - solistisch wie auch als Duett oder Trio. Der erfahrene Lehrer wird das Repertoire fortgeschrittener Schüler durch weitere verfügbare Literatur sinnvoll ergänzen. Die technische Vervollkommnung besonders begabter und ambitionierter Schüler kann mit anspruchsvolleren Übungen fortgesetzt werden, und zwar aus dem Begleitmaterial I. Tonleitern und Akkorde, II. Trillerschule, III. Doppel- und Tripelzunge und IV. Die Barocktechnik. Hauptziel dieser Lernphase ist es, das Instrument hinsichtlich der Atem- und Grifftechnik sowie des Rhythmus' in aller Vollkommenheit zu beherrschen und alle, auch die einfachsten Lieder und Stücke, überzeugend vorzutragen. Spieler und Zuhörer müssen zu der Überzeugung gelangen, dass die Blockflöte kein bloßes "Spielzeug" ist, sondern ein vollkommenes Musikinstrument mit großen technischen und musikalsichen Möglichkeiten reicher Literatur. Als Fortsetzung des vorliegenden Lehrgangs ist die Einführung in das Altblockflötenspiels vorgesehen. Schülern mit kleineren Händen wird der Beginn auf der Sopranino-Blockflöte empfohlen.
