Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs. School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

Your accompanist will like the way the pizzicato rhythmic figures in the string section have been fleshed out with notes on strong beats to help make the rhythm fit the hand better.Of course, it would be a great show-piece for social and civic events; its inspiring message would even serve in church-related functions. It may take a bit longer to get all of it under the fingers, as anything worth showing off would demand. Published by David McKeown (A0.587789). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Trumpet and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. I originally composed Ping-Pong for tuba solo. The following is a trumpet transcription. Although the program note relates to the tuba version, trumpet players might find the explanation of the genesis of the music helpful.When I first spoke with Sande MacMorran, the tuba player for whom I composed the piece, we discussed the technicalities of the instrument; its optimal range, timbre, and articulation. Sande mentioned, in passing, that the rhythm of swing music is a natural fit for the instrument and even sang a few lines to give examples.In the following days, when I began to plan the new composition, I was surprised that the idea of playing ping-pong unexpectedly took hold of my mind and I couldn’t shake it off. At first, it seemed random and unrelated, but then, as I thought about the rhythmic patterns of the game, it all became clear.In ping-pong, the paddle hits the ball and then the ball hits the table in a pattern reminiscent of the rhythm of swing. While beginners tend to play slower, in triplets, the professionals, much faster, with the table note dotted or even double-dotted. Once I realized what my subconscious was trying to tell me, I listened to (not merely watched) several videos of ping-pong matches and discovered a wealth of entertaining rhythmic patterns. Thus the idea for this miniature tuba piece was born.While the tuba may seem a clumsy and awkward instrument, it is actually quite agile and flexible. It can perform many challenging melodic figures or quick jumps between registers, and it can certainly play ping-pong.Total duration: 1'25, for advanced players.

Published by Ken Saul (A0.898024). J. B. Arban (1825 - 1889) wrote a number of fine solos for cornet and piano that are published in the big Arban's method book. But there are a few more of these solos that were not in the big book, and this is one of them. La Muette de Portici (the mute girl of Portici) was an early French grand opera by Auber. These opera melodies were the most loved popular songs in Arban's day, and he wrote this gem of a solo using several of the beautiful melodies from the opera. The original solo was for the now-obsolete cornet in A. I have transposed it so it is playable on the modern Bb cornet. This solo is every bit as fine as the ones in the back of the Arban's method book and will be a hit on any recital.

He was known in his lifetime as the waltz king and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. He revolutionized the waltz, elevating it from a lowly peasant dance to entertainment fit for the royal Habsburg court.

Conley (A0.927727). Three Miniatures is an unaccompanied solo trumpet work originally intended for the C trumpet, but I was later convinced that the Bb trumpet suits it better in many different ways. When performing the Miniatures, I would recommend that you choose the instrument of which you feel is right for the piece. Initially I wanted to write musical etudes or exercises that would improve my own playing but, as more and more ideas came together, it gradually became its own interesting piece requiring different styles and techniques that I thought others might enjoy playing. There are elements of music in these three miniatures that may come easy, but are intertwined with later challenges to keep the player’s interest. Rather than giving you some sort of programmatic background to each movement, I will supply you with only a few words for each; your imagination can carry you from there. Three Miniatures was recorded by Bruce Gigax and performed by Jack Sutte on 7/29/19 at the Audio Recording Studio in Solon, OH.

This Premier Solo does not appear in the big Arban's method book so is rarely performed. It is just as beautiful and challenging as the solos with variations in the big book.
