This volume is a compilation of exercises of various authors which have already been tried and tested in practice. The editor has added some new pieces of his own to the selection. The exercises are mainly aimed at the advanced player or beginner. Great importance has been attached to tonal quality, ties and slurs, rhythm and technique. In order to counteract the - unjustly - poor image of studies, the editor selected or wrote mainly studies which have a certain musical quality and encourage the player to improvise.

Finally a modern collection of folk tunes for the trumpet! The songs come from England, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Italy, France, Spain and the USA. Popular melodies such as 'Auld lang syne' and 'Oh happy day' are set in easy arrangements and can be played on various occasions, be it at home, at school, or in an ensemble. The arrangements can also be played with an additional second part.

A contribution to make the classical period accessible to the trumpet: Of medium difficulty, Kristin Thielemann's arrangements of performance pieces and sonatas by James Hook (1746-1827) are ideal for tuition as well as for auditions and competitions. Several songs of Hook were arranged as instrumental pieces and serve as a good start into this repertoire. More advanced players may try the sonatas. Apart from the frequently played Sonata Op. 99/3, even lesser known sonatas might be interesting for the trumpet because of their well-chosen keys.
All the pieces have been recorded by Prof. Reinhold Friedrich (trumpet) and Eriko Takezawa (piano) as full version and play-along version.

Most trumpet players blow downward a bit too much. as a consequence, the pressure point lies on the lower lip. The result: .a thick, dull tone without treble and smoothness. The present technical exercises help to shift the pressure point to the upper lip. Thus, a much better treble, a finer tone and generally a better embouchure is gradually achieved. This also helps to keep the lung more open when blowing and to develop better lung volume and strength. Not least, it helps to avoid postural impairment, e.g. damaged discs or atrophied lungs.
