Improvisation (1987) trumpet solo was conceived during Nash’s Master of Music Degree in Composition studies at Western Michigan University from 1986-89 and is one of four of his musical works written during that time that is still receiving performances today. Improvisation is in three movements. Movement 1, marked Allegro-Rubato, beginning at q = 120 is unmeasured and unmetered and begins with the trumpet playing 16th note passages in a high tessitura. This is interspersed with slower passages with quarter and eighth notes, building up to the fast note passages like the opening melody. Movement 2 is slow, q = 50 and Movement 3 is marked Allegro Con Fuoco, q = 144-160, mostly in 4/4 time but interspersed with a few 3/4 and 2/4 measures.

Here, the famous Waltz is arranged for Solo Trumpet and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet was in St Petersburg in 1890. Like his other ballets, Sleeping Beauty was slow to gain popularity with the public and international recognition only came after Tchaikovsky’s death. Included in the single download are nine pages of piano score and an attached four-page part for the solo instrument. Musicians at an upper intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in parts with a high tempo throughout. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and the solo part explores a wide range of the instrument. The overall performance time is around five minutes. Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. This version of When I’m Sixty-Four is arranged in a suitable key and range for solo Trumpet. Piano/Guitar chords in concert pitch are also included above the stave.Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The original piece is part of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, written for his patron Prince Leopold sometime between the years 1717 and 1723. The title comes from violinist August Wilhelmj’s late 19th century arrangement of the piece for violin and piano. By transposing the key of the piece from its original D major to C major, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string. The air is usually played slowly and freely, and features an intertwining harmony and melody.

Breathing is one of the most natural things we do; when we apply it to trumpet playing we frequently distort certain aspects. With good breathing habits all aspects of playing improve. This not only includes tone quality, range, and endurance, but also tonguing, slurring, and even fingering. Proper breathing is inhaling and exhaling large amounts of air, it is more important to breath from the diaphragm. Remember it’s important to feel relaxed when you breath, this well help your air flow and to breath better. When we breathe, we store all our air in the lungs, and then we start to breath from the diaphragm. o Empty the lungs entirely. o Slowly lower the diaphragm allowing air to enter the lungs while filling the bottom of the lungs with air. o Expand the ribs without straining. o Allow the lungs to completely fill.
