Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810961). The Sonata for Solo Flute (Wq. 132) was composed in 1747, although it was not published until 1763. This transcription is in the original key of A minor, where it lies perfectly in the bass trombone range while also playable on the tenor trombone with F attachment. The first two movements can be reversed to create a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, or played as originally published. The length of the three-movement work is about 10 minutes and is appropriate for advanced performers.

This composition, in four short movements (5 minutes total), is for trombone and hi-hat - played by one player.At the request of a friend, this composition began in 2008 as a concept for solo bassoon. Sadly, the friend passed away before performing the piece.When I was asked recently for a solo piece for bass trombone, I finally had a reason to update the original. Besides adapting it for the instrument, I also added new material. The result is four short movements for bass trombone with hi-hat, both played by one player. The hi-hat is played mostly with the pedal, but occasionally with the fingers.The final step in the evolution of this piece was this edition for tenor trombone.The first movement combines chromatic patterns, diminished scales, and blues licks. The hi-hat adds kicks and color.The second movement is a blues progression that swings, with backbeats on the hi-hat.The third movement attempts to obscure tonality through the use of chromaticism. It should be played very freely (rubato), with the hi-hat again adding color.Only one minute in length, the final movement treats a four-measure melody as a theme and variations reminiscent of Arthur Pryor solos of the early 20th century.

S. Bach, each of the Three Volumes is available in five different versions--Alto Trombone, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. Each version is customized for the individual instrument (choice of key, range, ornaments, etc.). Tenor trombonists will find that the Alto version is excellent for high register practice and alto clef reading. Likewise, Tenor trombonists can use the Bass version for low register work. Bass trombonists will find excellent material in the Tenor version for work in the upper register and tenor clef reading. The Euphonium version is in the same key as the Tenor version, but all in bass clef, with many more trills added. The Tuba version is in the same key as the Bass version, also with more trills. Volume One contains Twenty-four études in all keys, based upon preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier.

From its earliest beginnings in 1742, others have modified it to suit more modern-sized (larger) orchestras. From the original small baroque-sized orchestra in the early 18th Century to the Classical-sized of Mozart through to the full 20th Century version including percussion and tuba by Sir Thomas Beecham. Others have felt that if Handel had lived in their century he surely would have written his grand masterpiece for larger forces, given the passion of the work.This is Mozart's arrangement from 1789 which was subsequently first published in 1803 and has a Classical-sized orchestra including Alto, Tenor and Bass Trombone. According to Austrian custom of the time, the Trombones were to play ALL of the tutti choruses. Mark LaFratta has beautifully written out edited and transposed all of these choruses into the correct clefs for us to enjoy.This version is for Alto, Tenor and Bass Trombone, parts only ...... no score is included...the conductor has that.Trombonists.....this is your chance to be bold and insist that the Trombones perform in the next Messiah. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the trombone while keeping the wide tessitura and the many clef changes of the original. Alternate positions are included to make the music more fluid. I have not indicated whether an alternate position is to be played slightly higher or lower. The trombonist should know what adjustments are needed, and adding the small sharps or flats would only clutter the notation. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding. Ralph Sauer

The Bass Trombone version was premiered in August 2019 at the 2nd annual Vancouver Trombone Week, with the composer adding an emphatic (if unsophisticated) cowbell accompaniment to Morgenstern?s bass trombone.
