?Meat Salad? is a new piece for solo Tenor Trombone commissioned by Ilan Morgenstern of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Inspired in part by the slap-bass stylings of artists like Bootsy Collins and in part by the inimitable trombone playing of ?Funky Fred? Wesley, this piece is simultaneously a groovy crowd-pleaser and an acrobatic showstopper. ?Meat Salad for Tenor Trombone? gives the advanced tenor trombonist the opportunity unleash his/her full repertoire of tricks including: trills, growls, turns, glissandi, extended range, and just about every type articulation imaginable.
The Bass Trombone version was premiered in August 2019 at the 2nd annual Vancouver Trombone Week, with the composer adding an emphatic (if unsophisticated) cowbell accompaniment to Morgenstern?s bass trombone.

It uses quarter tones in the 12-TET scale, making a 24-EDO solo. The piece is good either for recital performance, or for use as an etude. It received its world premiere at the Society for Composers Region VI conference in 2019 at Texas A&M-Commerce. A performance takes about 5 minutes.

This composition, in four short movements (5 minutes total), is for trombone and hi-hat - played by one player.At the request of a friend, this composition began in 2008 as a concept for solo bassoon. Sadly, the friend passed away before performing the piece.When I was asked recently for a solo piece for bass trombone, I finally had a reason to update the original. Besides adapting it for the instrument, I also added new material. The result is four short movements for bass trombone with hi-hat, both played by one player. The hi-hat is played mostly with the pedal, but occasionally with the fingers.The final step in the evolution of this piece was this edition for tenor trombone.The first movement combines chromatic patterns, diminished scales, and blues licks. The hi-hat adds kicks and color.The second movement is a blues progression that swings, with backbeats on the hi-hat.The third movement attempts to obscure tonality through the use of chromaticism. It should be played very freely (rubato), with the hi-hat again adding color.Only one minute in length, the final movement treats a four-measure melody as a theme and variations reminiscent of Arthur Pryor solos of the early 20th century.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792651). Bach's Partita BWV 1013 is a wonderful unaccompanied work, and in all likelihood, was written for the Transverse Flute, though that is by no means certain. In fact, there is an earlier version of the Allemande for a keyboard or stringed instrument. The Partita, originally in the key of A minor has been transposed down into D minor, putting it into a perfect range for Solo Trombone. The work is in four movements: Allemande, Corrente, Sarabande and Bourrée Anglaise. It is appropriate for advanced performers. Cherry Classics has acquired Ralph Sauer's earlier edition of the Bach Partita, BWV 1013 for Trombone Alone from Balquhidder Music. Mr. Sauer has taken this opportunity to update the transcription.

From its earliest beginnings in 1742, others have modified it to suit more modern-sized (larger) orchestras. From the original small baroque-sized orchestra in the early 18th Century to the Classical-sized of Mozart through to the full 20th Century version including percussion and tuba by Sir Thomas Beecham. Others have felt that if Handel had lived in their century he surely would have written his grand masterpiece for larger forces, given the passion of the work.This is Mozart's arrangement from 1789 which was subsequently first published in 1803 and has a Classical-sized orchestra including Alto, Tenor and Bass Trombone. According to Austrian custom of the time, the Trombones were to play ALL of the tutti choruses. Whoa. Beavis and Butthead with the low brass; a most stimulating prospect. A previous and, I'm sure, less interesting engagement kept me away, but the formative idea behind Behavioral Science was born: how do you civilize the eternal adolescent that is the trombone/trombonist without taking away its/his/her essential energy and joie de vivre? Behavioral Science, then, is about the trombone and, to a degree, trombone players themselves (which, by the way, I was once one myself and my daughter presently is). The piece begins with the trombone completely out of control - a raucous, screaming, stuttering length of lacquered plumbing. Across the span of the piece the trombone gradually learns lyricism and self-discipline, gaining maturity and, ultimately, self-mastery. Behavioral Science concludes with a series of extremely virtuosic passages that require, as they do, the most exacting control imaginable. Behavioral Science was composed between December, 1997 and February, 1998. It is dedicated with great affection and gratitude to Neil Hatler for his help, advice, and tireless dedication to the piece.

The etudes are one page each, very challenging technically, cover the four major clefs, explore the extremes in range and are very satisfying musically to perform. If practiced correctly, these etudes will surely be a help to aspiring performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810822). Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume II of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Trombone study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the trombone while keeping the wide tessitura and the many clef changes of the original. Alternate positions are included to make the music more fluid. I have not indicated whether an alternate position is to be played slightly higher or lower. The trombonist should know what adjustments are needed, and adding the small sharps or flats would only clutter the notation. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding. Ralph Sauer
